Topsy Tail Braid Style

June 30 2006, 2:15 PM

I like this because it is versatile. It can be elegant & dressy as shown in the first two pics with a nice hair comb(this is a victorian comb from my collection) or it can be funky and casual as shown in photo three fastened with a clip and fan the ends out more. How I did it: First put hair in a ponytail, do a basic topsy tail (take the pony up and over through the middle of the band). Seperate hair into two sections, make a braid of each section so that you have a two. Loop the ends of the braids up and under through the middle of the pony tail band and secure with a comb, clip or hairstick and arrange the ends fanned out as much as you like.

Triple Braid & Many Variations

June 30 2006, 2:33 PM

First divide hair into three sections. Braid each section so that you have a total of three braids.

Then braid the three braids together to make one big braid.

Wraped in a bun & secured with a hairstick

Here are some variations: First put hair in a ponytail (I put mine just above the middle of the back of my head). Then divide into three equal sections. Braid each section so that you have 3 individual braids. Now braid the 3 sections into 1 braid.

1st variation is just to loop the braid up to one side and secure (I used a hair scroo)

2nd variation is to wrap into a bun.

3rd variation - I looped around once as if to make a bun and then brought up the tail leaving a large loop (the size will depend on your length) and secured with a hair scroo. 1st pic is back view, 2nd is side view.

4th variation - This photo shows the 3 braids we made above with the ends looped up to the base of the ponytail and secured with a scrunchie.

5th variation - MY NEW FAVORITE! In this photo, I took the 3 individual braids and wrapped them into a simple bun and secured with a hairstick. 1st pic is back view with my baby on my shoulder, 2nd is side view, doesn't it look cool??

6th variation - Same as 4th exept I secured with a clip & fanned out the ends instead of hiding them underneath. 1st pic is back view, 2nd is side view.

7th variation - This is kind of a funky medieval looking style. Instead of looping all 3 braids, I looped two & secured with a clip & used the 3rd to wrap around my head to look like a crown and secured it with a hairstick, my daughter loved this!

I threw these together quickly or I would have used something that looked better than the clip to secure, but it was fastest for the pics. I hope you enjoy them, I sure had fun coming up with them and I am thrilled to have a new bun to do!

Chinese Bun

June 30 2006, 2:40 PM

First, put your hair in a ponytail. High or low depending upon how you want it to look. Next, put a hairstick behind your ponytail holder horizontally.  Divide your hair into two equal parts and take each part and put it up, over and behind the hair stick (in the direction towards your face). Now wrap them in opposite directions around the ponytail holder and looping around hairstick.  I simply tuck the ends under my hair and it holds, but you can use pins, claws or a scrunchie around the base to hold it.

In this version (#2), the instructions are exactly the same except after bringing the hair up & over the stick, I then cross the two sections from one side to the other before wrapping it around the base.
For the braided version, braid hair in two sections after putting it in a ponytail & then follow the same instructions.  This is a braided version and with my Peacock hairstick from Sticks & Stones.

Braided Band Ponytail

June 30 2006, 2:42 PM

Simple style to embelish a ponytail. After putting hair in a ponytail, make a small seperate section and braid it. Wrap the braid around the base of the ponytail and fasten with a hair scroo or pin.

Scarf Braid & Bun

June 30 2006, 2:47 PM

Put hair into a ponytail. Tie one end of a scarf around the base of the ponytail. Divide hair into two sections and using the scarf as the third section, make a braid.

Wrapped in a bun.

Re: Style Gallary

June 30 2006, 2:57 PM

Here are photos I took of my daughter with a couple of updos I created when she was a Kindergarten attendant at the school prom and for a little miss contest in our town. In the first photo, what I did was put her hair in a ponytail and then I made 10 small 3 strand braids. Next I looped them all up and secured with the ends all fanned out. Then I curled the ends with a curling iron and attached ribbons around the base. In the next two photos, I must confess I don't really remember exactly how I did it! I know I started a Dutch perimeter braid behind one ear and worked to the other ear and then finished the tail and wrapped it around her head to look like a crown braid. Before I started I left out a small piece to do a little accent braid to loop across the bottom & then I put several jewelled bobby bins all over. I hope you enjoy the photos and maybe they provide some inspiration since my instructions are lacking. These photos are from four years ago! I've got to start taking more photos of the styles I do on my daughter's hair. I only wish I had someone to do mine!J033.jpgJ005.JPG J006.JPG

Topsy-tail Styles

July 7 2006, 3:40 PM

First, here is a basic topsy tail ponytail.
In the second photo, I have added what I call an uneven braid. It is a basic braid, only you use two small sections on the outside and leave the middle section large when you braid.
The 3rd photo, I call a Herringbone Heart. After the basic topsy tail pony, I made a single herringbone braid and secured with a band, brought up the ends and put a clip to hold it up where the band was. Next I divided my end into two parts and brought each end around to the bottom which looks like a heart. I tucked the ends and that's it.
For the last photo, I made three topsy tails and decorated.

Infinity Bun

July 12 2006, 9:50 AM

An infinity bun is a sideways Figure 8.  Instead of pulling the top coil up, take it to the side and secure.  In the first picture, I did it loosly and left my curled ends fanned out around the bun.  The second picture is a tighter Infinity. The 3rd pic is a braided Infinity. More variations.

French Twist

July 12 2006, 9:59 AM

This used to be my favorite hairstyle when my hair was shoulder to bra strap length, but now it's alot harder to do. I have to wrap my hair under the first coil twice before it works and I usually leave out the ends as shown in the first pic.  The next 3 pics show that I made a bun on top of the twist and secured with a Ficcarre and a hairstick in the last photo.

9/26/07 - I found some great clips that are for thick hair and I used 2 to make a french twist and then left long curls hanging over it in these photos. Back & side view:

Double Bun

August 2 2006, 9:49 AM

This is a simple style. Part hair down the middle and make a bun out of each side. In the first photo, I have secured with bobby pins and it looks a little messy. In the second photo, I just slipped a scrunchi around the base and it makes it much neater and more secure also.
I left the ends out, but they could be tucked under as well for a different look.

Half-up Mrs. El Knot

November 4 2006, 1:45 PM

The instructions for this are here: http://www.network54.com/Forum/242462/thread/1054023744/The+Mrs.+El+Knot...+%28aka+The+Hairstick+Knot%29

I cannot, no matter how I try do all of my hair, it is too long and too thick, but I really like this style so I came up with a version I can do. I took the top half of my hair and twisted per the instructions above and only did about half of it and left the other half out. Here are photos:

Double Ponytail

November 4 2006, 1:50 PM

This is a simple style I do often. My hair is so long & heavy that it kind of droops in a ponytail, so I came up with this solution. I divide hair in two (top part is above ears, bottom is below) and put the top part high on the back of my head, then flip it over my forehead to keep it out of the way while I do the bottom part in a pony in about the middle of my head. Then I flip the top back down where it lies right on top and beside the bottom pony. Here is a photo:J050.JPG

Ponytail Bun

November 13 2006, 12:05 PM

For this, I divided my hair in two sections crosswise and put the top section into a ponytail. Then I wraped the bottom section around the pony tail into a bun.

Rope Bun

November 13 2006, 12:10 PM

I divided my hair crosswise in two sections and put each in a ponytail, one directly over the other the same as I did in the Double Pony. Then I twist both sections around each other forming a twisted rope. Then I wrapped in around in a bun. The first photo shows it loosly wrapped and secured with pins. The second shows that I wrapped the bun a little tighter and secured with sticks. It is the exact same style, but you can see that it looks different just by adjusting the tension.  The other pics show Ficcarres & Hairsticks holding the bun.

Worm Bun

November 13 2006, 12:16 PM

My son named this one. It's actually a very pretty style, but hard for my to do on my own hair. First put hair into a ponytail. You can divide into as many sections as you want. For this photo, I did five sections. Then twist each section and secure it with two bobby pins crossed together and tuck under any loose ends.  The hairsticks are for decoration only, they aren't holding the style.

Knot Bun

November 13 2006, 4:40 PM

For this bun, hold all your hair in the left hand as if to do a ponytail. Using your right, bring the hair up over and around the left hand and grasp the hair with the fingers of your left hand.  Hold the hair on top of your left hand with your right hand while pulling the length of hair in your left fingers through to form a knot.  Wrap the length around the base of the knot you have made to form the bun and secure.

Variation 1 - follow instruction above except before wrapping the length around the base, but after having made your knot, braid the length.  I have secured with 2 hairsticks as shown photo 1 (back) & 2 (side).

Variation 2 - Curl the ends of your hair.  Follow instructions above, but instead of tucking your ends under, arrange the curls all around and then secure. Back, side, & front views:

Variation 3 - hold all hair in the left hand as if to do a ponytail.  Using your right hand, reach over your left shoulder and under your left arm holding the hair to grasp the length and wind it around the base once or twice depending on length and grasp it with the fingers of the left hand that is holding the pony. Now take the length through the loop of hair you just created starting the bun just like tying a knot. Then wrap the remaining legth around the base of the knot and secure.  I secured it with two hair scroos and used the hair stick just as decoration in photo 1.

The instructions can be found at the Loom, you just make two - one on top & bottom. This is a little too funky looking for me, but I thought someone else might like it.

4 Braid 1/2 Bun

February 21 2007, 12:09 PM

I did this style on my daughter's hair. First, I put the hair in a ponytail. Then I divided hair into 4 equal sections and braided each section for a total of 4 braids. I took the 2 "outside" braids and wraped around the pony base to create a bun around the two braids left hanging down. I also fanned the ends out on each side and secured with a hairstick that I made for her for Valentine's Day.

Braids

June 9 2007, 11:50 AM

This is a slide show of braids I have done on my hair. Included are a French braid, Dutch braid, Herringbone braid, English braid, Uneven braid, Pigtail braids and a Rope braid.

For the Uneven braid all you do is take two small sections and one large section and do a regular English or 3 strand braid.  For the Rope braid, take two equal sections and twist them around each other.

Style Tips

June 11 2007, 12:56 PM

By making small adjustments, you can vary any hairstyle in many ways. I do these three things a lot and even my daughter will think I have come up with another style.

1. Simply by parting your hair to the side instead of down the middle, gives any updo a different look.  And you can vary the degree of the part from slightly off center to a deep part. This will work for braids too.

2. Another way to change the look of any updo is to change the placement on your head. If you usually wear it smack in the middle of your head, make it higher or lower.  For a braid, instead of wearing it down, loop the end up at different lengths for an elegant updo.

3. This is my favorite way. By adjusting the tension of your bun or braid, you can make the same style look completely different.  Try it and see for yourself.  A tight french braid looks totally different from one that has been done loosly.  The same goes for any bun.

Here is an example of my Rope Bun. At first glance, these styles look completely different. The only difference is the first photo is done at a normal tension and the second is done at a looser tension.

 J058.JPG J056.JPG

Here is a regular french braid with curls, then done loosly and put up partially.

A side part on regular cinnamon bun for a change

Try one of these options on your favorite style and see how you can make it into 2 or more differnt styling options.

Side Buns

July 4 2007, 5:37 PM

7/4/07 - Decided to try doing some buns on the side of my head instead of the back. I really liked a couple of them. The first one is a regular bun done on the side of my head.  The next two are a side braided bun- back & side view. The next two are a partial figure 8 done on the side - back & side view. The next two are a side knot bun.  The next is a very sloppy chinese bun done on the side.  The last two are my favorites. I did a regular side bun, but the top kind of flopped over and I secured it with hairsticks and it looked pretty good that way; a back and front view.

Figure 8 Bun

July 16 2007, 4:17 PM

Start by wrapping (loosely) as if to do a regular cinnamon bun.  After 1 or 2 coils around, flip the top coil up into a figure 8 shape.  The 1st pic is done tighter, the 3rd has loose curls left out, the 4th is done loosly & the 5th is braided.

Cinnamon Bun

July 17 2007, 2:34 PM

Simply twist and loop coils around each other the way a cinnamon roll looks.  You can lay it flat against the head or put the coils more on top of each other.  Can be done loose or tight for completely different looks.

Perimeter Braids & many variations

July 28 2007, 12:52 PM

I started with two basic perimeter braids.  A perimeter braid is like a french braid except you only add hair as you're braiding on the outside edge. On the inside, you work it just like a regular braid.

These are pic of it down, pinned together & with a claw.

This is a perimeter crown braid (back, side, front)

This is a perimeter double bun (back & side)

A double perimeter twisted loop with fanned ends held by a claw.

A double perimeter loop with ends fanned out & held by claw (back & side view.)

(back & side view) perimeter braided bun

Another perimeter braided bun held lower.

Tri-Coil Bun

August 2 2007, 5:53 PM

I started this wrapping as if to do a cinnamon bun.  When I got a half a coil done, I flipped it over to the side like an Infinity bun. I kept twisting and flipped another section downward and kept twisting more and flipped the last section to the opposite side as the first.  It is hard to explain & I'm sure I am not doing an adequate job, but hopefully you will enjoy the picture anyway.

French Twist Coil

August 2 2007, 6:00 PM

My hair is too long for a decent looking French Twist now, but I love the style, so I try to come up with variations I can do.  I start this off as a French Twist and then loop the remaining coil around my head and secure.  It is a very different look.

Pouffy Loop Bun

August 2 2007, 6:15 PM

I started with a very high ponytail and when pulling my hair through the elastic the last time, I only pulled it through part way to make a pouffy loop, then I wrapped the rest of the length of my hair around the loop to form a bun.  The first photo is done high on the head with a short loop.  The second pic is done low on the head with a long loop.

Sock Bun

September 4 2007, 12:36 PM

Here are pics of a couple of sock buns.  The first set of pics shows the bun and two accent braids.

The second set is just the bun.

To make a sock bun, put hair in a ponytail.  Use a form or rolled up sock around the base of the pony tail.  Arrange you hair all around the sock evenly and secure with a scrunchi.  Wrap the remaining hair all around the base.

Tribal Bun

September 4 2007, 12:50 PM

This is a very tall wicked looking bun.  To make it, I pull my hair up as if I am going to do a very high pony tail.  Holding the hair in one hand, I use my other hand to pull up the length of hair about 6 inches from my head and grasp all in one hand.  Using my other hand, I start wrapping the length around the six inches on top, going up & then back down and tucking the ends under.  I use two hairsticks to hold it up.  The first pic is a front view, next a back view and last a side view.

Cinnamon Bun wrapped with braids

September 20 2007, 2:41 PM

Put hair into a ponytail.  Section off two equal pieces - one from the right and one from the left of the ponytail and bring them forward over the front of your shoulders.  With the remaining ponytail, wrap it into a cinnamon bun and secure it.  Next, braid one section of hair and take it diagonally across the bun and secure at the bottom.  Do the same on the other side so that you now have an "X" across the bun with your braids.  Now wrap the braids around the base of the bun in opposite directions and secure them.

Messy Buns After Cutting

March 14 2008, 4:57 PM

Sorry, but I can't post instructions with these now.  As you can see, the hair I cut in the front is still long enough to pull back, so you can't tell that I cut it.  These are variations of the knot bun.  I just turned the hair different in one style & did it looser in another.

Link to all my bun photos together

September 24 2008, 9:47 AM

Here is a link to my photo album on Bun Lovers Yahoo Group.  This is most of my updos all together in one place.  If you go to the bottom of the page, you can choose the slide show option and it will show all without having to bring them up individually. I can't get a direct link to work, so go to this page http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Buns/ Select Photos, go to page 3 and choose the album Lori's Buns.

Dutch braid infinity bun

October 24 2008, 6:18 PM

For this style, I did a single Dutch braid and then wrapped the braid into an infinity bun at the nape of my neck.

For bigger pics, you can go to the link to all my buns on bunlovers.
