Are student fees paid for them to fight?

On Friday, June 30, I saw a sight that came out of a Hollywood movie. Students fighting and chasing each other down a very busy highway and going towards a place where people from the Magi Highway wait to catch PMVs to go home. I was on a No.4 bus on my way to Boroko from Waigani to do some shopping with my daughter. The bus had just gone into the tunnel on Waigani Drive, when we saw all these people running, some ahead and some after them hurling whatever missile they could get their hands on. The sight was not a very nice one and only to be told that it was a fight among school students — Badihagwa and De La Salle Secondary Schools. They were almost identifiable because most of them still were wearing their school uniforms. I was appalled and saddened at the sight and the fact that we as parents spend so much money for school fees, which does not seem to be getting any cheaper and expect our children to go to school and get an education to be better prepared for their future. We do not expect them to go to school and end up fighting on the streets for whatever reasons and with other students from other schools. What I witnessed on Friday is a scene that will stay with me for a long time. I do not know if the authorities are aware of these fights. Not so long ago it was primary school students who were fighting among themselves, now it has reached secondary level. Are the schools breeding students to become street fighters or to become good citizens? What will the school authorities like NCDEB or even the police do about this? – Concerned Parent Port Moresby

If teachers are no better than students in logical reasoning, i now know one of the major root causes of community, high school and secondary school kids moral break down. I suggest teacher eduction so be significantly integrated with Ethics and morals. We now read many cases of teachers abusing their position of trust. We should now rethink the aproach of educting future teachers, I suggest compulsory pray or religious eduction for all.

Parents are at fault

I think teachers are at fault because the students do not get tough disciplinary actions or that there is no disciplinary at all.

Most of the blame should be shifted to parents because they have not done their part in bringing up their children properly. I believe that if you are taught well and disciplined well from an early age, those values stay with you throughout the rest of your life.
So to cut a long story short, in many homes all over the world today, there is a breakdown in family values and morals so you see the results on the streets. PNG is no exception.

Thanks
