City hotel boss gets deported

A FORMER Port Moresby hotelier has been deported to Australia where he is wanted for questioning over the alleged murder of a police officer. John Cougiannis, formerly a manager of a city hotel, was deported by police and immigration officials on Sunday after he was arrested last month for being in possession of two firearms, illicit drugs and sex accessories following a police raid on his Six Mile premises in Port Moresby. National Capital District (NCD) police say the Australian of Greek origin refused to board the Air Niugini flight to Brisbane but was eventually forced and escorted by two Air Niugini security guards and policemen as well as an immigration officer. It is understood Australian authorities had a warrant of arrest pending for Cougiannis where he is wanted for various other offences including alleged credit card fraud and illicit drug dealings, besides the murder charge in the state of Victoria. A Government official told the Post-Courier yesterday Cougiannis was an associate of Malaysian deportee Ashton Peters, who gained notoriety in July last year when he entered the cockpit of Air Niugini’s B767 aircraft bound for Singapore and tried to strangle the pilot in a bid to stop his deportation for overstaying his visa. Firearms confiscated during the raid at Cougiannis’ home included a pump action short-gun and a .38mm (handgun) Sig pistol. Several penis vibrators, dried marijuana leaves and 63 pornographic video CDs were also part of the cache. The first Sig pistol was seized by police when Cougiannis allegedly fired two shots after an argument which led to a scuffle with security guards at a Port Moresby hotel and he was also stripped of a PNG firearm licence. A Government spokesperson, in a statement last night, said Cougiannis’ deportation was based on the recommendations of the National Intelligence Organisation (NIO), after he was assessed to be a security risk in light of evidence allegedly implicating him in several offences.
