PNG military planes take supplies to Solomons

PNG has answered an urgent call for help from the tsunami-ravaged Solomon Islands by making its Arava military aircraft available for the delivery of supplies to areas badly affected by the tsunami.

PNG Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare said the C-130 aircraft had been used so far to deliver emergency relief supplies, however they were large planes and could not land in areas with shorter landing strips badly in need of aid.

The Arava aircraft will take supplies from Honiara to Choiseul and the western provinces of the Solomon Islands.

"Emergency supplies from local and overseas are arriving in Honiara and have to be distributed to those area affected in Choiseul, Balale in the Shortlands and Mono Islands," Somare said.

"However, all these places have short airstrips (on which) only a smaller aircraft can land and take off. Supplies to these areas are waiting in Honiara to be moved to areas where they're needed.

"The supplies delivered by the C-130 aircraft to Munda are taking more than a day to reach their destination and the Solomon Islands Government is concerned about the plight of the people who have been deprived of food and shelter."

PNG has also pledge 1 million kina ($US340,600) toward relief operations.

The request for aid was passed through the PNG High Commissioner in Honiara.
