How many Chinese nationals are we to expect to be "imported" to work in the Ramu nickel-cobalt mine?!
Since the conception of the mine, there have been several ball-park figures which have been presented to the public by the Government and widely reported in the PNG media ranging from somewhere between 300 - 700 Chinese nationals.
Those proposed figures alone seemed to irk me, until I read Max Rai's letter of defence in today's Post Courier (14 Feb, 2007). In his letter titled 'We Must Learn to Work and Live With China', Rai states that the Ramu nickel-cobalt mine project "...will bring in several thousands of Chinese workers".
"Several thousands"?!!, and that coming from the former Ambassador to China who played a key role in clinching the MCC/PNG Government deal.
I wonder if any offspring who are born in PNG from these Chinese citizens can apply for Chinese Citizenship?

This is absolutely absurd!!...thousands chinees to do what?? This is totally crazy, even Oktedi or Lihir didn't bring in thousands of Westerners to develope the mines. This guy must be hunged!!

3,500 new work permits for Chinese is what a highlands MP told me. He said that this includes police - Chinese police - and they're told to tolerate no nonsense from the landowners.

Hmmmm...these MPs do not realise that they are only making matters worse and making everyones lives difficult.
As usual, it must be another back door deal for sure.
As long as there is huge sums of money involved, they do the unthinkable.
They are a bunch of dummies and puppets decorating those offices with their greed-driven motives to satisfy their selfish ambitions.

Interesting,
but what is needed is solid facts. The internet is a haven for innuendo, rumours, and conspiracy theories.
That being said....It does once again appear, that PNG is being "screwed by experts"(as well as expats) on this deal, once again. HIG; LHG; have made no profits to date. OSH; shows bugger all. PNG energy; to me somewhat dubious as an investment. The list goes on and on.
Profits and benefits for PNG....That really is, "The land of the unexpected".
Regards......Ralph.

I totally agree, this is the election period in PNG and aspiring candidates will say anything to get the attention and stirup emotions of the masses. We should be always critical hearsay comments.
