Does anyone know about the state of the library at UPNG?

Any suggestions on how to improve it?

Hi Zoii,

Please explain some of the difficulties that you face within your Library.

Has your Head Librarian considered Digital Archiving for improvement?

Your Good university can create projects within the school of IT. Introducing projects thats pupils take on, not just for gaining "the papers", but improving the library and its Archiving System. University Libraries are the most up to date with advanced archiving of Data into Digital Photo archives (as well as Physical Data preservation) . It takes alot of work to obtain such standards that most developed countries have, but nothing is impossible, the challenge can be yours if you feel the need to be a radical and come up with your originality to improve it. If you are thinking of seriously doing something, keep seeking more ideas. Speak to your Heads of Departments and give them something constructive to think about from your end other than Political office War, which is happening in the University of Goroka.

Ta,
Tweak'maniac

Hello Tweak,

I agree with what you said about archiving data into digital photo achives. BUT at the moment UPNG library lacks good up to date books.I was there in 2002 and saw that most of the books there were as old as the early 19th century and collecting dust on the shelves. It was really hard to find good up to date information on certain topics which I believe is making learning alot more difficult. On the other hand students are forced to buy new textbooks to make learning more easier. The data photography can be tried too but computers are limited, outdated and slow. If we get a good second-hand book dealer to donate some of the used text books in Australia or New Zealand, that would be very helpful.

I think alone we cannot do much. The government has to really take the lead if it wants a healthy and literate population. It has to spend money on the library to gain in other sectors of the society.

One suggestion would be that, influx of new mining, petroleum, nickel and fisheries projects could be tied to developing the libraries and at least provide funding for the libraries.
