Should be the right one.
I've double-checked, or alternatively I could post the reading up here.
Cheers!

extracts taken from the national.

...................................................................
Parliament granted a 7% increase of official vehicle allowance, a 16.6% increase on support vehicle allowance, an 18% increase on electoral vehicle allowance and a 22% increase for driver’s allowance.
On accommodation, the SRC noted that costs of rental had risen by 40% since this allowance was last reviewed, and recommended a 100% accommodation allowance after considering residential security, which was approved.
The MPs also voted for an increase of 10% for domestic/gardeners allowance, a 25% increase in utilities allowance and a 25% increase in mobile telephone allowance.
The MPs would also receive a 30% increase in their electoral allowances.
An increase in residential telephone allowance was not considered because there were no tariff increases and security allowances were catered for under the accommodation allowance.

well koso, its because the government have put themselves on a level way above the people that they find it hard to govern the people. We ask the question if they have any heart for the ordinary people at all. A 25% increase in mobile telephone, incredible!!...while people die of poor medical supplies in the rural areas, run down road conditions, lawlessness whilst resorting to black jesus cults to hope for services and goods...a poor display for people first and a typical election bid!!

Why PNG is so hard to Govern

November 16 2006, 8:02 PM

Extract:
If there is one thing upon which almost all of the senior political figures in PNG I have interviewed for this documentary agreed upon it was that their country suffers from too pure a form of democracy. Nobody concedes anybody else the right to tell them what to do and almost every Member of Parliament believes he or she is destined for the top job in the country.
***************************************************************************************************
I found this bit rather interesting. If as Dorney says, too pure a form of democracy, where do you draw the line? Is there too much or too little democracy?

Reponse to : Why is PNG so hard to govern!!!

November 17 2006, 3:20 PM

Very true to the statement that PNG suffers from a "too pure a form of democracy". And I agree 1000%. So what do we do about it?

I believe that we should move into a more feudal system of government where economic, judiciary and political autonomy should ly with the provincial government. Each provinces should be given the opportunity to develop on their own sweat and gut. (resources & initiative to drive development.)Currently, the provinces look to the natonal governement for funding because everything is in POM. That is why most MP are in POM, and become driven into corrupt practices becuase they are away from the watchfull eyes of their bosses.(the people of their home province)

Because everything is dependent and emerges from Waigani it is an easy escape for leaders to say, Waigani didn't give us, the party is not in government, givernement is sitting on it etc...when answering queries about development in the provinces.

We need to make MP more accountable by giving them the responsibility and power from within the provinces..

All feel free to comment

what???Feudal system??

November 19 2006, 5:21 PM

Feudal system, thats is one poor suggestion!

Feudal system is another word for dictatorship!..absolute power. Anyway, i agree that we have to pure form of democracy...as such i agree with the current logohu awards given by the State...we have to blend our tradition exsisting governing systems into our democracy.

Blending traditions.

November 20 2006, 6:10 PM

Anon, spot on! Maybe one of the key reasons as to why Papua New Guinea is in fact so hard to govern. As you say, 'we have to blend our tradition exsisting governing systems into our democracy'. It's case of east meets west, PNG is at the crossroads of not knowing where to draw the line with the Western World's idea of democracy that in fact it may have been abused, hence Dorney's reason for calling it 'too pure a form of democracy'.
