Rural networking at its best.

By YEHIURA HRIEHWAZI
MOBILE phone craze has taken the East Sepik province by storm.
All pre-paid phone cards are out of stock in the province.
People have been rushing into Wewak town to buy them over the last two weeks as soon as mobile phone services were connected to Maprik, Yangoru and Angoram.
Anticipating the arrival of the service, many people had purchased the phones and were awaiting the arrival of the service.
The response had been overwhelming, Telikom’s project manager Simon Krahwazi said.
“Mobile phone fever is incurable … all the pre-paid cards had been sold out and there’s high demand for mobile phones also but they cannot afford the high cost of purchasing them,” Mr Krahwazi said from Yangoru.
He said Maprik, Yangoru and Angoram were operating from their respective sectoral antennas which started two weeks ago and Mt Turu, which covers the entire province, was switched on last Friday enabling mobile services to reach as far as the Sepik Plains, Prince Alexander Ranges and the Sepik coastline.
With the mobile phone services in Yangoru and Angoram, Mr Krahwazi said the residents in the two stations were now able to also apply for fixed telephone land-lines to be installed.
He said Yangoru was yesterday installed with an Israeli-made system called Broad Access 40, which also enables broadband (high speed) connectivity and internet facilities.

As far as I know Ship to Shore calls and Shore to Ship calls have been around for years. You have to call the radio operator ( ours is in Sydney ) he then connects the call to the ship, you are given instructions while on the phone as you finish saying your sentence you have to say OVER and that allows the radio operator to then broadcast the reply to you, the other party must always say OVER when finished speaking too.

Its a bit hard to get used to but I have managed such calls and after a while you forget that your being listened to and saying over becomes second nature. You have to call your phone service provider and the BOOK the call to the ship at sea so that the person you are calling is sitting in the radio room to take your call.

Hope that helps you out with Ship to Shore calls

Mes

Well anon,
the answere is: If tey have a tower in that areathen you will have service.

Go to; SETTINGS; scroll to; PHONE SETTINGS. Turn PHONE SETTINGS on.

At the bottom of your screen will be the name of the tower in which area you are in. For instance at present I am in "Redbank West" area. This message will change as I drive arond Brissie or even Qld. If I am out of range of any tower, I will get a "OUT OF SERVICE" message. Therefore, I know my phone will not work in that area.

I know PNG Telecom has been gradually extending the transmission areas. So, as I am not sure of the extentt of the new areas, that is the easy way to find out.

Hope that helps......Ralph.

Had you attended the KSI farewell Bbq, you would have run into me. (Figuratively speaking, I hope)
