The information we have dating back to the 18th century, shows the surname KOSBAB originated from Stolp, Ostpreussen in Germany, now Poland. Still there are folks that believe Kosbab was not the original surname but a derivative of a surname possibly Kusibab, Kosbar or Kosbau.
What do you believe was the original surname and can you support it ?

Promes surname connection?
by
How is the Promes surname connectied to the Kosbab family? Johann Kalpar Promes immigrated to USA from Westfalen, German by way of London in 1881. Other surnames on your list related to our Promes family are the Reutar (Reuter), Thoene, Uhing who settled in Cedar County Nebraska. I'm updating the Promes Family History at this time & cannot find the Promes branch of Germany. I'm suspicious that the German branch is spelled differently. Any reply would be greatly appreciated.
My Opa was named Johann Gustav Adolf Wilhelm Kosbab (phew! 4 names!) and came from the Rostock area of Germany ... he married a Scotswoman named Marjory Hamilton in the early 1930s and eventually moved to Scotland. They had three children, Olga, Patrick, and Johanna (my mum). He passed away in 1960 at the age of 50 ... well before I was born. The thing is, I know the history of my Scottish family, but know nothing of his side and thought I'd give a shout out and see if anyone knew of a Kosbab with 4 names from that area around that time.
I was flicking through the web and I saw your message posted in 2005.
I am your mother's cousin - the second son of your mother's mother's (whom I know as Maude)brother Andrew.
Hope you are all getting on well and give my regards to your mum, my big cousin
Hello guys,
I am from Hamburg/Germany and my name is Kosbab too! I am surprised, that there are so many Kosbabs out there.
I would like to know where else on earth Kosbabs went to. Maybe in China.
Our family-members are:
-Head Hans-Werner Kosbab born: 08/19/1945
-Mum Monika Kosbab (Winkler) born: 06/18/1946
-Me Tim Philip Kosbab born: 06/24/1984
My GG Grandmother Johanna Louise Kosbab was born Dec 4, 1866 in Reiz Kr. Stolpe Pommern in NE Germany near the sea. Her father was Karl Kosbab and her mother Ernestine Jagenow.
She came to the province of Ontario in Canada when she was in her early teens and worked for a family named Roney as an "au pair" girl. Her brother also left Pommern at this time, but we believe he went to New York.
In 1888 in the small town of Germanicus/Golden Lake Ontario, she married Carl Friedrich Furchtegotte Berger (born Aug 27, 1861 in Friedburg, GR Neumark Prussia (SW of Berlin).
She later came to Toronto, which is where our family now lives, and provided the family with a good solid Lutheran faith.
Any information anyone might have about any branches of the family tree would be greatly appreciated...
Hello Anne, My roots lie in the German Kosbab's. Great Grandfather came to the US in 1882 on the Ship Holland, they sailed from London. His name ws Edword , wife August, daughter Bertha(my grandmother) and son Paul. His father's name was Henry. how do I go about searching in Germany for my roots? Lois
surfing the web, I discovered that the website "www.kosbab.org." has vanished resp. is said to be under construction.
Whoever is responsible for that site (webmaster etc.), please let me know if the site really is going to be re-established and when this is going to happen.
Best regards to all Kosbabs out there in the world.

Hello, I have some information on my family, great grandfather was Edward H. Kosbab from (grandma said) Pommerson. I am now wondering if it was Pommeron, Prussia. My Aunt said they were Polish and gram very firmly says, we are German. How do I find them. He was born in 1867, came to america about 1880. He was married to Augusta C.Galinski. She must of been Polish, which fits the polish land and german people. I also would like to be in touch with someone who can help me locate a site of research. Some day I am going to Germany to search more. My other great grandfather was a Sahr and came over about the same time on the shipPrinz Albert May 31, 1873. So much History. Don't know where he was from either. Thanks, Lois
Hi everyone!
The home of www.kosbab.org will be back online shortly!
The old site and family tree became a jungle of unconnected branches, where I was spending more time answering questions than getting answers!
Maybe that's genealogy, but it's not what I wanted for our family web site. I wanted a factual 'warts & all' account of my family history.
Inspired by an excellent 'genealogy' web site: http://website.lineone.net/~cahaley/
also kosbab-related web site authorised by Carol Haley.. I am slowly putting the finishing touches to a new home of www.kosbab.org
Sorry for taking so long, but there's a new link in the chain, and his my darling baby boy, Jaxon!

Ich bin auf der Suche nach meinen direkten Vorfahren!

I am Colleen Kosbab, wife of Christopher Kosbab, son of Neil Kosbab, son of Herman Kosbab. Do any of these names sound familiar? I am writing this message in hopes of receiving correspondence from other Kosbabs.
Welcome to our site. I am a Kosbab by birth and our family tree is on this site.
Where do you hail from, and what time frame do you have? I recall seeing the name Herman Kosbab on the German IGI in the LDS FamilySearch site. Have you tried there yet?
So you are a Kosbab eh? If you could tell us a little bit more about where Neil and Herman are from we might be able to tell you a little more! Since we now have so many Kosbab's in our tree, it is impossible trying to seperate them without more information.
Hope we hear from you...
Brian Kosbab
Neil is my father-in-law and his late father Herman Karl Kosbab was from the mid-west, ran a farm, did several trades, and had 2 wives, and I think the latter one's name was Leah, and passed on in 1998 or 1999 (I can't remember). Neil has at least 3 siblings I know of and he is currently in his early 60s.
Neil Gustav Kosbab is my father in law. Herman Karl Kosbab is his father. Both were born in USA. Neil has 2 or 3 brothers and 2 sisters I know of, June and Margaret. Neil was in the US Military a long time ago and then married Georgia, had several children, Mark, Susan, Laura Lynn, and Anne Lynn. He had 2 more - my husband Christopher, and another named Nina. He is now married to Linnea. He is a social worker for the government working with disabled and elderly adults.
I don't know much about Herman other than that he was a farmer in the midwestern USA and a very devout Christian. He lived well into his 90s and passed away in winter of 1998-1999.
Hi Colleen, I am a greatgrand-daughter of Edward Kosbab. I know he and his wife, Augusta, and my baby grandmother came over in 1878. They were from Pomerson. I have learned that was a country and not a city. I don't know how to find the town they lived in. I am now 68 years old and all the old folks are gone. Any ideas? Where were your folks from? Mine came before Ellis Island , I've been to Chicago to look but I couldn't find much of anything on them. Lots on my Dad's father,(this is his mothers side) Even found the ship Gottlieb Sahr came on. Well, I hope I hear from you. Lois
I, too, am a great granddaughter of Edward and Augusta Kosbab. Was your grandmother's name Bertha? My grandmother was Ida, born 1890 in Sandusky, Ohio. I'd like to be in contact with you.
Hi
I am also a great great grandson of Edward and Augusta Kosbab. I have been working on the family tree for the last 10 years and have much information
Well, I've been in grad school the past 3 years, and somewhere along the line, the website went down (or at least my server did every time I tried to access it, maybe a case of Murphy's law). Now that life has forced me to slow down via a broken foot, I can think about things a bit more and get back to my projects from before we moved to California.
I am a Kosbab by marriage. I don't know much about my husband's father Herman Karl Kosbab, except that he was from the midwest and his second wife's name was Leah. Herman died in the Winter of 1998-99. I saw Herman during his last days in nursing care, but I had only been married to his grandson (Christopher Mervin Kosbab) for 5 months by the time of the funeral. Unforunately, I didn't get a chance to get to know Herman all that well. Herman's son, Neil Gustav Kosbab is my father-in-law. Neil was in the US military, and he shares an e-mail with his wife Linnea (kosbab@houndofheaven.com). Neil has at least 2 sisters I know of - June Frisk and Margaret Rhymeer, both in Washington State. Neil's brother in Long Beach, CA just passed away within the last week. Neil has several children - Mark Kosbab (WA), Susan Burke (WA), Anne Lynn Averill (WA), Laura Lynn Bergman (CA), Christopher Mervin (CA - my husband), and Nina Kosbab (CA). Some still live in WA, but we moved to CA so I could attend graduate school, which I am still doing (e.g., writing my dissertation now).
I wish I oculd help you locate your relatives. I am trying to find my husband's. I don't have a lot of money to join sites or buy software, so I have to stick with my local public library.
Firstly our surname dates back the furthest...
It is the most basic of all the spellings, leading to the derivitives based on spelling and pronounciation differences between countries. And finally there are more of us Kosbab's than all the others put together...
Weight in numbers!
Brian Kosbab
I wholeheartedly agree, but then I would. However, I believe that they didn't come from anywhere in Germany, nor for that matter anywhere on this planet! So, just look out on clear night at the sky, zoom in on Planet "X" and there you will surely find the rest of us!
We have always wondered how Carol manages to escape from her straight jacket each night to write her emails. At least we now have it in writing...
And we always thought she was from Mars not Planet X....
Apologies accepted, Jerry. But actually Mars is pretty appropriate, I reckon finding the Kosbab family is just about as likely as anyone of us takinga trip to Mars!
I would but my spaceships all broke up!
Sorry Brian, seems were getting way off track here, but giving us space (no pun intended) to write was tantemount to letting us vent our imaginations. By the way Brian, Maddy, Linda, Loren and me are well into the old Tarot, and all things Spiritual, quite deeply actually. So no more mockery of the unknown, use it and you too will find how helpful it can be. I'll be back, Carol
What do I see... Deep Space, Mars, Oops I goofed and Whey our yonder...
by
It takes me months to set up this serious forum and the first time I check to see what input we have had, I get this...
DEEP SPACE, MARS AND I GOOFED...
I like a joke like the next bloke but has anyone got anything remotely interesting to say on the subject...
Where's that cousin of mine... Loren.
She's always serious!
She'll enter into a serious debate...
Well, I would but I used to be indecisive!
But I have changed...
Now I'm not sure !
boom boom...
Keep em coming !
Sor-ry Brian, but you did ask for it, and anyway it appears that there are no Kosbab's out there who are interested in their Roots, other than ourselves. So why shouldn't we have fun. By the wya, have you put our GEDCOM onto RootsWeb yet. I would but as your the expert in matters computereze, I think you should be the one to do it. If you don't want to or more likely don't have the time, then let me know and I will see if I can do it.
This is to everyone and I suppose it might answer questions on family tree, for one!

I am the son of Neil Gustov Kosbab, who is the son of Herman Carl Kosbab(aren't those German sounding names), and have decided that it is not in mine or my family's best interest to have anymore children, unfortunately. It would have been awesome to be one of those in a long list of members to carry on the family name, but it's just not looking like that will be so. My father is a great man and so was his father, and I'll never forget that fact. Neil and Herman lived in Everett, WA(USA) for many years if my memory serves me, and they were very close. My dad took care of him in his last days and I was able to see all of this. I would be glad to answer any questions you might have about my father and my Grandfather. One more fact I'll ad is that my brother Mark, is a Kosbab, and you never know he might just be one who will carry the family name. Mark is about to get married. Also, I should tell you that I am very honored to be a part of something great, like this particular family. By the way I would not have known anything of my geneology if it weren't for this website.
Thanks to all of you,
Christopher
