John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
The word "devil" in this instance doesn't mean Satan or even demon, however. A devil <1228> was a "diabolos" and meant a false accuser and/or a slanderer. Jesus, for instance, said (about Judas), "have I not chosen you 12 and one of you is a devil?" <1228>
And in 1 Timothy 3:11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. the word "slanderers" is the same <1228> diabolos. I guess by the year 1611 it wasn't "nice" to call wives 'devils' ... so they used the more polite "slanderers".
One of the big problems with English translations is that they DIDN'T stay as true to the meaning of their Greek counterparts as they attempted to stay true to Christian doctrine. Thus, you find many single English words like "Devil" having DIFFERENT words used in Greek. When they accused JTBaptist of having a devil, the word was "daimonion" which actually MEANT a bad spirit.
