I also do it to save time and water. Now I know the best way to get all the spaghetti sauce out of the jar would be just to let it soak but as crazy as it sounds that doesn't work for me. I hate stuff sitting around on my cabinet and my sink always has dishes sitting in it waiting for the next load in the dishwasher. So for me to get all the spaghetti sauce or salsa out of a jar I would stand there swirling water in and out of it wasting quite a bit of water and time. I'll admit that during cooking things are always crazy with 3 kids running around and I want things to stay orderly and quickly be thrown away.
But like I said since our town is saving money on recycling pick up although we have one of those huge hoppers the same size as the regular trash it is always too full by the time pick up comes around. We would normally have it filled at least 3/4 of the way full when they picked up every week so now we have to just throw some recyling away anyway.
Now everyone is different on their issue with the water vs. recylcling. My parents are crazy tight when it comes to money. Things like a/c is set so warm we sweat just sitting around, it would NEVER be an option to play in the sprinkler because that costs money, etc. etc. BUT they have to pay per bag to take trash to the dump so they recycling more than anyone I have seen. You can take recycling for free so they have pulled things back out of their trash can I threw away. Cool whip containers, pizza sauce cans etc I'll use while at their house. They would rather rinse it and use water than pay to take it to the dump. My mom heard my opinion on choosing to throw it away over using water and she said she'd rather do that but Dad would never let her do that and he's too old to change! hahahaha!
And yes Maxine you are right, NC went through a major drought and I guess we are still in it but conditions have gotten better. We were on water restrictions and encouraged to cut back as much as possible.
