| I am thinking about gardening. I think this mild winter is tricking my brain into thinking gardening season is a lot closer than it really is..... I want to garden... Last year I closed on this house 6/22, so I did not get much gardening in, I threw a few plants a friend gave me into the ground, and just by pure luck I got a few cukes, a few tomatoes and some raspberrys.....
I have nothing really budgeted for this. I can maybe squeak out $50... I'm thinking probably I am gonna HAVE to pay someone to rototil for me. I'm thinking of stopping by over at my former neighbors house ( next road over) and leaving a note on his door. He does not live there any more... but he goes there to garden, so come spring he will be there.... tell him I moved over here and will he come 'till for me for $20?
So now I am taking stock of what I have here (other than way too much shade) I have some good sized pots including 2 of those big ones that slip over the deck rails (herbs?). I have access to lots of great black soil out in the woods- however much I want to dig (fun.... and bugs...) , I have lots of bamboo stakes for staking things up. I need to get some rotted manure... so I'm thinking $20 for manure unless I can find some free rotted manure..., $20 for neighbor to 'til and $10 for plants (?)..... I looked and I have a bag of seeds. Some are OLD..... but there is a LOT here.... How old seeds can I still use? I guess I figure if they germinate then I can use them.....
Flower seeds- I have Calendula (packed for 08) Marigolds (08) phlox and poppies (both 08 too) morning glories (04)sunflowers (03) zinnias (07). Then for veggies I have -corn (08) parsley (09) cilantro (no date I can find on it) beets (08) carrots (08 and some 03s) green beans (08) salad mix (08) cukes (09)spinach (05). No tomatoes... but if even half of this stuff came up I would have a good start on flowers and veggies... only thing that's not here that I would want would be tomatoes.... maybe a few radishes. Am I missing any other big things? Maybe yellow squash/zukes? I'm trying to think where and what I could use to try to start some of these seeds. Our last frost date is not till end of May (Zone 6) so we have quite a while to go till I would need to worry about putting these outside but I am betting the lettuce and spinach could start, maybe? When do you plan to start seeds, or when would you for zone 6? ? Do you save old seeds? How old is too old? How would you start them if you had no starting pots and not a lot of indoor space to start them?
Anyone else dreaming of a garden? Making a new start of it some place you have never gardened before?
