My friend Suzanne sells on eBay a lot, and specializes in china, crystal and--when she has it--sterling silver. (She once bought an entire set of sterling at an estate sale for $75 and sold it piece by piece). At the moment, she is helping her friend sell an entire set of sterling. The friend took it to one of those traveling silver brokers and was offered $650--Suzanne says they will make at least $2,000 by parting it out. She lists a few pieces at a time and started the bidding high; what doesn't sell, she is able to re-list for free and at a lower price.
