Tonight we ate local ( mostly)

It's not always easy but I try to buy locally produced food if it is available.
So dinner tonight was 3 courses because of what we had ( and I can tell you I am so stuffed!!)

Starter - marsh samphire picked by our NZ friends cousin from the marshes on our coast - he has a boat and can get out easily to where it grows ( he picked 20kg!)We ate it steamed with buttered toast and a bit of pepper. It is absolutely delicious, and tastes of iodine and the sea!

Main course was
BBQ sausages made from local pork with sage, with baby carrots( grown up the road) broad beans bought at a car boot sale from someones garden, and local new potatoes.

Dessert
Blueberry tart made from blueberries picked by us this morning at the PYO farm. I don't know where the flour or shortening came from that I used for the pastry, but all main ingredients came from withing 20 miles or so.

Except the bottle of wine which was Australian!

Do you live in an area where you find a good choice of locally produced food? I know plenty of you ( Bethann for instance) produce it themselves, but what else do you have available?

I had to look up Marsh Samphire

I had never heard of it before. Interesting plant and I wonder if it grows here on the coast. Are you going to pickle some for the winter?
Around here right now we are starting to get green and yellow beans, peas, spinach (still) some lettuces and early cucumbers. No zuchini yets or melons. The strawberries are done, the raspberries should be on the market now but theres been too much rain and they molded on the canes. But the blueberries are fabulous. And the early peaches are in. I'm just about to make sour cherry jam today too.
i'm starting to buy more meat locally now that I know where the farms are and eggs too. If I could only find a cheese place nearby I'd be set.
It's fun to search and I think the food tastes better too.

Raspberries!

July 25 2008, 12:19 PM

DH went with me to recycle this morning, and noticed a sign for raspberries just down the road from us. Naturally, we bought some (he's a berry freak)--$17 for 1/2 crate. (That's probably going to wreck my $100 week grocery budget, but oh well).

I wish I had access to some

to pick myself - I think you need a boat to get out onto the marsh, but you never know - it is pretty prolific in this area apparently. So I won't be pickling any - and it is far too succulent to freeze - it would go to mush.

Strawberries are just about over here too and have been reasonable. Raspberries are coming to an end too and have been brilliant - last year it was too wet and we got none.

Mid August and the plums are ready( and the wild bullace which make great jelly, then the blackberries and sloes. oh and apples and pears too

I'd love to be able to find cherries - no chance of peaches!
It would be good to find blackcurrants too - we used to pick them at a PYO place near here about 30 yrs ago but can't find it now!

I can get

July 25 2008, 7:52 PM

all manner of bison products, chickens, eggs, spring wheat and some local produce. There is a large U-Pick place about an hour from here where I could get some berries, etc. I can get other things in season from the farmer's market, too. DD looked for me last week and there was a small zipper bag of new potatoes for $5 or a small zipper bag of tomatoes for $5. Oh, I can also get honey!

If I was clever and knew people who knew people I could do better...
