What would you do with this rug?August 27 2011 at 6:48 AM | PJ (Login ruralgirl) The Frugalista Files |
| It is maroon and creme, wool hand carded persian rug. Roommate gave somewhere around $600 for it, then put it under his dining table (yeah,I can't figure that out either), then his dog (mr pisser) peed on it. I've laid it out on the garage floor and went over it with the steamvac. It is so thick that it hardly soaked to the back. But it still smells like dog. I think it's 8 X 10 and heavy. |

Try white vinegar first. I'd make a stout solution of 1 cup vinegar per gallon of water and put it in the machine. Let the rug dry in the fresh air--don't forget, wet wool has its own smell, and you won't know that the pee is out until you can smell the carpet when it is dry.
If that doesn't work, try mixing Biz and water and applying that; let it sit awhile to do its work, then rinse with clear water. The enzymes in Biz just might do the trick. In fact, you could even try this first.
As the rug gets dry (and lighter to move), get it outside into the shade. Fresh air may do a lot for that rug! Also, if you can get it up on saw horses or something like that, the bottom will dry faster.
It sounds like a gorgeous rug--just the right colors for my bedroom!!

Oh, I don't think you want to do any kind of machine on that rug! You want professional advice AND intervention.
PS> The rug was under the dining room table (glass, presumably?!) so you can see it but people don't walk on it. It helps it last longer. It was hand made by poorly paid people so it should be respected and revered. Not walked on OR peed on. I guess the dog didn't read the memo... |

This product (available at pet stores) has done wonders (miracles?) with cat urine smells.
Have no idea if it would do anything to the colors in your rug though....my carpet is cream colored and I haven't noticed any "color" issues but cream doesn't bleed much |

Ever once in awhile a cat will come around and spray thats good to know what to use on that! I bet it will work on that rug! I'm sure something or the combination of stuff will! It seems to be colorfast so far! Thanks |

I highly recommend Pine-Sol to get rid of pee smell. Let it soak.
I have tried everything else to get rid of urine smells and it is the only product that works. |
