what have you got hanging around that you need to use up? I'm thinking aobut a lot of beans (plain) in the freezer. a friend used to make a rice and bean (cold) salad, that was simple and good, will have to look around for that recipe.... I also have popping corn. That was part of the reason I let myself be talking into the cracker jax.... used up some pop corn. I have been also serving it to my kids as a snack, but really have to watch the butter with it! A big bowl of pop corn can take a lot of butter!!!! And that's not good for us nor will it help me get to Friday with the butter I have on hand, lol!
I've been in using it up, eating down the stockpiles mode since January, for economic as well as personal reasons. I'm using up items that I no longer want to purchase. I am using up items that are seasonal, so I'll wait until the season comes around again, before stocking up. I see a definite decrease in what is on hand, although there still remains plenty to eat as well as plenty of personal care items on hand.
As far as items on my bucket list of use this up NOW:
-a jar of gravy
-home canned relishes, jams, pickles, tomatoes, tomato sauce, pizza sauce, taco sauce, pie fillings, cranberry sauce
-fzn hubbard squash
-fzn shredded zucchini
-fzn b sprouts, chopped and sliced zucchini, turnips, cauliflower
-fzn, shredded cheese
-fzn ground turkey
-fzn bread crumbs
-canned green beans
-dried pintos, black beans, large limas
-enchillada sauce, Mexican "cooking" soups
-medium egg noodles
-couscous mixes, rice mixes
Definitely incorporating these items into my menu planning. My CSA pickup for the new season is tomorrow, I am really looking forward to it!
I usually make these with vanilla frosting and skip the nuts and raisins. My adult kids LOVELOVELOVE them. The recipe makes a 10x15 pan and I swiped the amounts of the spices from KarenPA's highly addictive pumpkin tea bread.
