Just thought it would be a nice idea for everyone to post some photos of their forest run ponies inclucing their names etc and where they are running. Not much seems to get posted on this forum so though i would kick it off!!
these are my girls:Furzey lodge Fiona running at Pilley allotments and bought from the sales in September 08
and Careys Daisy running at slufters/boldrewood/withybeds (not sure exactly as havent seen her since june 08 but im told shes fat and well by the agister!)

To be honest I don't see the point in owning a horse if he/shes just going to be running out on the forest.
Your two are very pretty.
No offence...I've just always wondered why people do this?
Anither thing, how do you know what stallion has been with you mare, surly there is more then one stallion in a heard, you can't garntee then all staying in the same spot.
I think my baby was running on the forest and then roundered up, were we brought him in the sales at 6months old.

The POINT of turning your ponies out is that we are carrying on a tradition that has been around for hundreds of years and nothing gives me more pleasure than going for a walk to find my girls and seeing them in their natural habitat! If it wasnt for the commoners turning their stock out we would not have a forest to ride your horses in as it would be overgrown or built upon.
The ponies tend to live in their own "haunt" a articular area where they run. You get to know which stallion is in their haunt and if your not sure then you ask your Agister. If you look on the NFPPG site you will see all this explained

Yes Sal, I agree completely!!
Think it's a great idea to promote interest in our 'architects of the forest'..
I've never done this before but I'm trying to post pics of a couple of mine - both running at Lyndhurst
Pragnells Margaret with her foal Pragnells Molly 240808
Cameron Vodka with her foal Pragnells Vera 240808
I've still got Vera, at home at the mo, but sold Molly at BR last year - would love have an update on her.
Can someone explain how to make pictures smaller?

i dont no where mine are i havent seen them for over a year!
Right ok.
Do you get to keep the foals? Seeing as they get rounded up at the end of the year?
How many stallions per a herd? If they are in herd's that is?
How do you know if your horse comes down with severe laminitis or anything else?
Alot of the new forest out there are not pure bred so surly it should be newforest only to carry on the breed?
I don't think its nice for mares to have foals every year.
I'm sorry if i've caused offence but you don't know until you ask, it was ment as a nice reply.

all the horses are owned so its exactly the same as your mare having a foal, its yours.
they get rounded up to check them over remove anything that needs to be or that owners want, count them ect
1 stallion per area although they do move around a bit they do tend to stay in their own area, any more than 1 stallion and they would fight.
if they didnt want to have a foal theyd stay away from the stallion!
nothing wrong with it, its what nature is and that is why the forest is so good because they are in their natural habitat doing natural things.
hope that helps abit

Seaspirit - thanks for help resizing pics - took me ages but I've done it!!
Would just like to add - we do try to check stock regularly - not always easy as some wander more than others, but the agisters keep an eye on them & are very quick to let us know if there's a problem, not to mention the public reporting anything untoward - (sometimes unnecessarily, but I'd rather be called out than not know about a possible problem).
Great idea, great photos, will try to get some of ours on later. Life hectic at the moment. I presume the foal is a Buckland Cruiser foal,we had a good one by him. We have got two ponies that run at Lyndhurst usualy on the racecourse, but they went round onto the Bench and now have dissapeared. We are looking for them and Mike Lovell is keeping his eyes open but if you are out there perhaps you would to. One is a black filly with no white, she will be with a bright bay with a white stripe and a mealy muzzle, her stripe is actually shaped like a C. Brand C with M in the middle of it.Both tailcut and wearing collars.

Yes, both foals by Buckland Cruiser, in fact I had 4 really nice ones by him last year. Will look out for your mares when I'm out there. Ours are branded with 'C'.

Nice ponies - so glad to see some more photos.
I really like 'Roanie', I'd love one that colour, & interested that she's by Billy boy - I had a really nice colt by him when he was at Lyndhurst, probably 10ish years ago.
Thanks Kathy, she's had some great foals. Second one was a chestnut roan (Lady)that PoshPenny nows owns. Third one was a lovely bay roan filly foal (Jinny) that I sold, cracking pony. The last foal was bay (Queenie), although there is roaning in her coat so it will be interesting to see if she ever goes roan. Her grandson (George)is also a bay roan. His dam was Lady.
Finally found her today - 10yds from the car park after I'd walked a 4 mile circle!

very nice mare Tina a real old fashioned type!
I wish i could find Daisy but im told shes well so will probably have to wait for the drift before i see her again!!
Here is a picture of Ashlett Hannah-Montana born two days ago. Her dam is Ashlett Maisie, her sire is Lovelyhill Hendrix. Maisie runs on Blackwell Common and has been out all winter.
Wow, its lovely seeing the forest run mares, without actually having to drive 100 miles to the Forest! I wish I would keep mine like that, the nearest I can get 2 is 4 acres of Pevensey Levels, but at least they have water to splash around in, and a natural dinking source. I have had several people say to me that its cruel to kep ponies on the Forest, I soon put them right, especially when you see the goings on of novice owners in some DIY yards!

I think it is lovely to see NF ponies out in their natural habit - I am sure if ponies could choose how they would like to live this would be it.
I dont live near the forest but my pony Homey spent a few year out there when he was a stallion so I really like to see all the photo of the ponies.
Its a very old tradition - and its half the fun the mystery of which stallion - but you nearly always get it right - its a chance you take. The forest would be a jungle if the ponies were not there.
