Wrestling and Football as Complementary Sports

by

I have heard rumors that the varsity football players have been directed by the coaching staff that they should not wrestle in the winter season. I have always thought that the athletic department at a high school should be unified in the goal to provide the best athletic teams (not team) for the school. If the rumor above is true, this seems to be at odds with the spirit of high school athletics. If an individual athlete decides to participate in only one sport that is his or her decision. The coaching staff should encourage the best athletes to participate in all sports they are competitive in. In the case of wrestling and football, a wrestling team would benefit from the big skilled football players, and football would benefit from the speed and agility that wrestling imparts on an athlete. For a excellent article on this problem at LCC go to the "NEWS" section of the LCC wrestling home page.

Without two athletes that decided to wrestle this year, it would have been difficult for LCC to be ranked 3rd in county. The LCC wrestling team should not have to "hope" to fill the upper weights every year. The coaching staff can develope excellent heavy weight wrestlers if given the opportunity to coach highly motivated football players. And the football team would benefit both from the physical aspects of wrestling but also the mental aspects.

As excellent as the coaching staff is at LCC, it's hard to compete at th county and state level without fielding a full wrestling team with all weights represented every year.

If this rumor is true, I think that the parents of both the wrestlers and football players should e-mail the athletic director and question whether this is a policy condoned by the school or is one coach protecting his self-interest at the expense of the other sports.

The e-mail address of the AD, John Labeta, is john.labeta@sduhsd.net. E-mail him if you have the same concerns as I do.

I agree, but...

by anonymous

Having talked to several good wrestlers who quit to focus on football, one of the key reasons they quit was weight. (I'm not saying it was the only reason) Football focuses on getting bigger and stronger and these kids felt that wrestling wanted them to get lighter at the expense of strength. Cutting weight sucks. If you're a relatively lean 171 lbs and for example, can bench 250 or 300 lbs, you shouldn't be asked to cut to 160 or even 152. Just be the biggest, strongest, 171 you can be and rip apart the guys who are weak from cutting weight.

I'm not saying that wrestlers don't need to watch their weight and attempt to get leaner for the season. Things aren't as crazy/dangerous (laxatives, plastic suits, etc) as they used to be, however, there is still a lot of pressure to "cut" weight and I think that has turned some kids away from the sport. They're tough but aren't willing to "suck-it-up" to the point where they suffer in other sports.

Re: I agree, but...

by Brian Asamoto

I don't think that LCC's program requires a wrestler to cut weight. At LCC, I believe that the coaching staff leaves it up to the individual wrestler to decide where he wants to be in terms of competitiveness.

Also, typically, the football players you need in the wrestling room are the heavier weights; 189, 214 and 275. Typically, these weights either don't have to cut weight or if they do, cutting 10-15 lbs is typically easier than for a middle weight.

Thirdly, the CIF within the last few years has significantly improved the certification for each weight class. This has been done specifically to deal with the main criticism of wrestling, cutting weight.

Cutting weight will always be a part of wrestling and it's what makes wrestling different from other sports. Each competitor from a size standpoint is equal. The difference is skill level, mental toughness, physical conditioning.

My message was only to make the parents of wrestlers aware of what may be happening in the athletic department at LCC which is making it difficult to compete at the state level.

Come on!

by Don Williams

The issue of cutting weight at LCC is nonsense. The issue of football players not wanting to cut weight at LCC and focus on strength and getting bigger is also hogwash.

This issue of weight cutting is a myth perpetuated by some football coaches at LCC to get kids to buy into "You have to focus on football all year" hype. I have personally had numerous conversations with numerous football players and wrestlers. I have told many football players to just come out and wrestle at what ever weight they want. I have told others to lift and get big.

Examples:
I told Taylor Cox at the beginning of the season to get bigger and just go 189 (His natural weight) instead of 171. Cox decided to go 171. TJ Webb and I had a long discussion several weeks ago about weight. TJ wanted to drop to 145 where he certified at. I told him there was no reason to do it. I told him to just focus on getting better and stronger. TJ eventually agreed with me. I told Ben Alei I would like to see him get bigger in the off season and go 152 or 160 next year. I told Bryan Grubbs to just go 112 this year. Bryan chose to drop to 103. I told my own son (Ryan Williams) in 2004 to just wrestler his natural weight. Ryan wrestled 152 his senior year. He was 2 pounds under weight the second day of the state tournament. These are just a few examples of the LCC coaches telling kids not to cut any weight. There are a few kids in the room that NEED to lose weight (Me included). Dropping a few pounds will not hurt them.

Some kids choose to cut some weight because they think that they will be more competitive or they can't beat the guy in front of them at their natural weight.

Also, the football-lifting program at LCC and focusing "On getting bigger and stronger" is a joke. Those kids go up to the weight room and sit around and shoot the breeze for two hours. Very few actually lift the way they should. As a long-term football coach I will tell you that the football coaches at LCC (And most schools for that matter) do not recognize the benefit that wrestling provides to a football player. Standing around in the weight room does not make a better football player. Learning body control, positioning, balance, hand fighting skills, and conditioning makes a better football player. Football coaches who don't realize this are fools. I tell every one of my football players to wrestle because it makes a better football player. Sitting around and getting bigger (Translation: fatter) does an athlete no good. It does not improve their football performance or their health. No one has ever been asked to cut from 171 to 160 or 152 at LCC. We are always hurting for upper weights. Asked the kids how many times I have told them to get in the weight room and get bigger (They usually don’t listen). I have been coaching football for 17 years. I HAVE NEVER SEEN WHERE A PERSONS FOOTBALL PERFORMANCE WAS HURT BECAUSE THEY WRESTLED. In fact, just the opposite is true. Every football player I have seen wrestle increased their football performance the next year.

Wrestling is hard work. Most of the football players I know tell me that they don’t want to wrestle because “I don’t want to work that hard.” I don’t have a problem with that. But don’t blame it on the “Weight cutting.” I have also talked to numerous players who stopped wrestling to focus on football. I will tell you they are blowing smoke and making an excuse rather than just saying, “It is to hard or I just don’t like the sport.” Saying I don’t want to cut weight is an easy excuse and it continues to perpetuate the myth that these kids are forced to cut huge amounts of weight. The ones I have talked to just can’t make the varsity line up and think it is beneath them to wrestle JV (One player who wrestled last year and is using weight as an excuse not to wrestle this year plainly told me "I'm a varsity athlete, I am not wrestling JV." He is one of the former wrestlers who has told numerous people he wants to focus on football and not cut weight even though he has never cut weight. He is just making an excuse because he does not want to wait a year on JV.

There is not one single frosh or JV wrestler in the entire LCC program that cuts any weight. Most just wrestle their natural weight and have been told to do so. The problem is that some wrestlers egos are so big they don't think they should wrestle JV.

Some wrestlers on varsity do cut some weight. They tend to be in the lower weight classes. However, the entire team has been wrestling up from their certified weight all year. We have only been down to our certified weight one time this year at the Modesto tournament. Virtually EVERY LCC WRESTLER from 152 and above has been wrestling AT THEIR NATURAL WEIGHT ALL YEAR. One is wrestling 9 pounds over his natural weight. Will Mahoney wrestled this weekend two weight classes higher than his certified weight. Only a few of the kids below 152 are cutting any weight and this has more to do with them wanting to be on the varsity team and can’t make it at their natural weight. They are always given the option of wrestling JV if they are a junior or below. These are the facts. So for all you football players that read this, we need upper weights and we actively try to get them to come out. In the entire time I have been at LCC, I have not seen any football players asked to cut weight. Just the opposite has been the case. PLEASE COME OUT AS BIG AS YOU WANT!!!!

I hope it enlightens a few people on this forum. Should you have any questions about the LCC program, feel free to stop by the room and I will answer any questions you should have.

peer pressure

I never said that LCC coaches were pressuring kids to do unsafe weight loss. A lot of pressure comes from the athletes themselves. "Dude, are you gonna make weight for Saturday?"

More nonsense!

by Don Williams

Actually what you said was:

"Having talked to several good wrestlers who quit to focus on football, one of the key reasons they quit was weight. (I'm not saying it was the only reason) Football focuses on getting bigger and stronger and these kids felt that wrestling wanted them to get lighter at the expense of strength."

The insinuation is that football players quit or don't come out to wrestle because they have to lose weight. I am telling you that is a misinformed judgment based on your conversation with some alleged former wrestlers/football players. I am saying those wrestlers are full of it. I know of four wrestlers who wrestled last year at the JV level or higher, played football, and did not come back to wrestle this year. Not a single one of those kids cut any weight to wrestle last year. I know because I weighed them at the beginning of the season. All wrestled ABOVE their certified weight (Fully hydrated at 7 percent body fat). I talked to all four of those wrestlers. None quit because of weight. All did not come back because they could not beat the guys in front of them and did not want to wait their turn again at the JV level.

Provide me ONE example of a football player that was told by anyone (Coaches or peers) to cut to a certain weight class. You can't because it did not and does not happen. We have a ton of good lightweight and middle weight wrestlers. We need good upper weights. The coaches know this and so do the wrestlers. Ask current team members how we tell them to recruit football players from the school. Especially the upper weights. They tell the players they do not have to lose any weight. A 250 pound kid telling people he does not want to wrestle because he does not want to lose weight (Yes, this happened this year) is nonsense. What weight is he going to cut to? In fact, he can gain weight (Up to 285). This individual knew this but just used weight as an excuse instead of just telling everyone what he told me which was I don't want to work that hard. You are buying into a football myth perpetuated by a few coaches. You tell me the wrestlers you talked to and what weight they wanted to wrestle at. I guarantee you they just can't beat the current starters.

Most team members will tell you I am not as nice or diplomatic as Coach Buth. But they will also tell you I am a pretty straight shooter who holds people accountable. I call it the way I see it and I pull no punches. What you were told just is not factual and someone is feeding you a lot of nonsense. Feed it to the football coaches because it is not selling on this forum. Should you want to discuss this further, please feel to come by the room and I will answer anymore concerns you might have.

Well said Don

by Capt. Hook

Just have those "football players" select any college roster on the internet and read the players
bios. You will find particularly in the Midwest and East coast teams(any division) have an abundance of
talented "high school wrestlers" on their rosters. College coaches like real athletes and I can assure you wrestling on your resume puts you way ahead of the pack when you are trying to standout amongst your high school football peers.
Wrestlers are seen as "winners" and the coaches know they have a work ethic before they ever step on the field. It is an incredibly foolish staff that does not encourage competition. High school should be about getting your kids to the next level (any division) in any sport and it might not be the one that you coach them in high school. 99% of these kids will not be playing football at the next level. Football players are not made in the weight room that is a huge joke, they are made by competition and if they run from competition in the wrestling room they will run from competition on the field.
Go MAVS, Congrats to Buth and Don as I know some of your Maverick wrestlers were or are playing football in college. Are they there because of wrestling or in spite of it. I know they are there because of it.

Re: Well said Don

I think this controversy may just boil down to the fact that most sports at LCC are a year round commitment. Football season begins the Monday after school is out. Summer is spent doing summer weights and camp with only a 2 week "dark" period. The season doesn't end until November. If the boys wrestle, they immediately go into wrestling season and practice until 6:00 every night and give up their entire weekends for tournaments. Most sports only take a couple hours to play on a weekend. As soon as wrestling season ends, the football players begin "Spring football". With the pressure of school work especially as the boys get into their junior year, I think they begin to have second thoughts. It takes a very special person to commit to wrestling and stick it out especially if they aren't having a winning season! That really can't be fun.

Your message seems to ignore the basic subject of my initial posting. We are not asking any athlete to wrestle if he does not want to wrestle. We want the decision to be a personal decision between the athlete and his parents. We do not want the coach of another sport dictating that a football player will not make the team or will not start if he wrestles in the off season. As previously stated, we only want committed athletes in the wrestling room. Any other athlete will not survive the season.

So the real issue is that if we want to have state level athletic programs for all sports, let the athlete make the decision of which sport he wants to compete in.

Wrestling and Football ARE Complementary Sports

by

all i can do is laugh at what im reading in here. for number one, if it was easy, everybody would do it, thats what makes wrestling an elite sport. as many of you know i did wrestle heavy and played football at lcc. from MY firsthand experience, i wouldn't have been as good as an athlete as i was while there. football gave me my strength and explosiveness where wrestling gave me my endurance and agility. if you ever saw me wrestle you wouldn't think i was a heavy. i was constantly moving, taking shots, being aggressive like a `89lber. this whole thing of sports becoming year round is a friggin joke. i chose to play football after high school in college, not because i couldn't "suck-it-up" or worrying about the whole "weight" issue. my senior year after football i was 285, literally two weeks after going into full wrestling practice i dropped to 245, not because i was "cutting weight" but because the demands on the body in both sports are very different. i wanted to become the best heavyweight and worked my butt off for it. you can ask any of the coaches and they'll tell you that they saw a difference. football, as a lineman, is about quick short explosive bursts. the average play lasts just 6 seconds, and that nothing compared to the 6 minutes of what happens on the mat if no overtime is needed. when i was in a transitional period between playing football and schools, i took a year off from playing and helped out Buth for that year. from the time that i was there helping out, i would talk to the football coaches and other prospective wrestlers, and i never got that feeling of just play football year round. there are some football coaches there that know the benefits that wrestling has on their athletes if you can call some of them that. of course the football lifting there is a "joke." with so many kids in that small weight room its hard, and i know just from coaching the lifting for wrestling while there, its hard to keep every single kid on track. there will always be those kids that just don't want to do it. frankly i dont care about those kids wether football or wrestling, since all they are doing is hurting themselves in the long run. i can remember way back in 2004, all of us seniors knew what we were capable of and worked harder than anybody else in the county. the whole thing about football "heavies" not wanting to wrestle, is because they cannot hack it. it's not that they are afraid of losing weight, it's that they are afraid of the hard work and the sheer dedication it takes to become a starting varsity wrestler. my freshman year i was a pure practice dummy for shabram. of course i didn't like it but practicing with the varsity is what helped get me into my mindset, "if your going to beat me, im gonna put you through hell." there are very few kids out there that can play varsity their freshman or sophomore year in either football or wrestling. those kids are the ones who know what is needed from themselves to become a bigger and better athlete. for every kid with huge potential and talent, you will always find those who just don't care and think everything will be handed to them. thats one of the reasons why i left a div 1 football program to play in a div 2 program. i have seen a lot in my sports career so far, from football and wrestling in high school to having my football season cut short from an illegal cut block that forced me to have reconstructive knee surgery. pretty much to sum it up, its not the coaches who are telling the kids not to wrestle, its the parents. when you look at it nowadays the parents push and push their kids into certain sports hoping that they can attain the "lucrative" full scholarship in college. i've seen a lot of parents forcing, either consciously or not, their kids to play one sport to become the best at that sport, it wont work. it wasn't long ago that i was in those shoes, but i wanted to play baseball, football and wrestle. for my major in college out here in minnesota, i can write a thesis on the "self-serving parents" on the west coast. as mentioned by my father, capt hook, out here in the midwest you will never find a single sport athlete. almost every player on the winona state team here have wrestled, especially us dline and oline. i showed one of my football coaches out here what everybody was talking about and he couldn't understand. he prefers players who have wrestled and in his words "they are most constant, reliable, dedicated young men." i just wish that a lot of the parents out there would come out here to the midwest and see how its really done.

so this whole thing in all is a double edged sword. you have the kids who are too scared to even try wrestling and the parents who want their kids to get a scholarship in football. a very stupid mistake the parents make that the kids pay for in not only physical means but in the social sense. put and let your kids into an array of sports and let them play the ones they want. once they find those sports, like i did, you become willing to sacrifice to become better. i can literally write a 15 page paper on this topic because of my firsthand experience. what the football team is trying to do is get those kids that they have who do nothing else besides to be active year round for a reason. a lot of the parents and kids view that as PLAY FOOTBALL ONLY, hell NO! i'll leave ya'll with these last thoughts.

1) what is it called when you peak? 2) what happens when you peak? 3)how do you get past it? most importantly, 4) how do you avoid over training?

1) maxed out. 2)the body has reached is max for what stresses are put upon it. 3) CROSS TRAINING gets you past your max. 4) variation is key if the body only uses certain parts, they will hypertrophy while the others will atrophy. in the world of young athletes, multiple sports will promote overall body strength, performance, and health via the prevention of injuries from over trained and stressed routines thus forming what is referred to as the "total package" in slang terms.

In the blood: A Q&A with La Costa Canyon wrestler Bryan Grubbs

By: TOM SHANAHAN - For the North County Times

Q: Have you seen the state championship medal won by your uncle, John, or by your La Costa Canyon coach, Dwayne Buth?

A: No. Coach Buth said he showed me his medal last year, but I don't really remember it. My uncle isn't a cocky guy, and he has his stuff put away. I've never really asked him about it.

Q: How much pressure do you feel to match your uncle's state title?

A: It's not really pressure on me. They didn't push me into the sport. I decided to do it on my own.

Q: When did you realize that you come from a wrestling family?

A: Around middle school, when I started getting into sports. In eighth grade, I asked my uncles and dad for help in wrestling.

Q: You don't see wrestling highlights on "SportsCenter." What are ESPN program directors missing about your sport?

A: Wrestling is a different sport, so a lot of people don't understand it. But I think if you watch it and pay attention, it's pretty exciting. If they tried to understand it, they'd find it more interesting.

Q: What sports do you like watching on TV?

A: When college wrestling is on TV, I like to watch that. I also like to watch the Chargers and the NFL.

Q: What's your favorite weekend wrestling invitational?

A: Last year we went to Reno (Nev.) for the Tournament of Champions. I liked it because it's a different state and we stayed in a hotel that's really cool. There were a lot of fans at the meet. It was almost like the state meet."

Q: You didn't place at your first state meet last year, but what did you learn from it?

A: I was really nervous because I had never been there before. I think I'll be more comfortable at state this time, and that will give me an advantage. I'll just try and wrestle like I always do.

Q: What's the toughest part about keeping your weight down?

A: Hanging out with friends who are eating whatever they want. That's a lot of temptation.

Q: What's your favorite thing to eat the day after wrestling season ends?

A: I like to eat ice cream.

Q: What do you like about competing for your high school team?

A: A lot of my friends on the wrestling team are cool to hang out with. It keeps me in shape and makes me work hard.

Q: What do you like about offseason wrestling competition?

A: It helps to get more experience, get more matches. They're fun to go to because you don't have worry about winning or losing. You just go out and wrestle. You can go out and work on things and learn from your mistakes.

Q: What was your best youth sport before you focused on wrestling?

A: I played baseball for a couple of years. I played second base and shortstop.

Q: Who is the biggest influence on your wrestling career?

A: I'd say my dad. He's really supportive. He takes me to a lot meets and helps financially with the cost of traveling and going to meets. He's always there for me if I win or lose.

Q: What's the best camp you've been to?

A: The La Costa Canyon team goes to the Camp of the Champions. Last year we went to two -- one in Riverside and one in Redlands.

Q: What's the most important thing you learned at camps?

A: The camps are pretty interesting, depending on the camp you go to. They teach you how to work hard, and that makes practice not as hard."

Q: Poway is such an overwhelming state and national power, virtually unbeatable for San Diego schools. What's the team's attitude when you face Poway?

A: Our coaches tell us we can win the dual meet, but in reality we know it's probably not going to happen. We know we have to wrestle our best. If we do that, then we know there isn't anything else we could have done. But there's not much you can do against them.

Q: What are your goals for the season?

A: I want to be a CIF Masters champion again and (I'm) hoping to place in the top three at state.

Q: What about matching the state title of your Uncle John or Coach Buth?

A: That's more of a long-term goal for me.

by Carlson

This is the best wrestling coverage so far this year in the North County Times. Too bad I couldn't find the photo of Nick Nelson in the online version.
