      When Writing Essays

      -Remember to:

      Write you name on your papers
      Number pages
      Proof read
      If emailing attach as word doc. or attachment

      Grammar:

      Modifiers- discriptive words, (adjectives, adverbs) generally tells "how" phrase

      Try to avoid Dangling Modifiers -- patriciples, words ending in "ing"

      "Running into the street, he spotted a fire hydrant."

      Political Parties
      Federalists -- Adams and Hamilton -- pro England, infavor of large central government power.

      Jeffersonians (Republican or Democratic Republican)-- Jefferson and Madison--pro France, wanted less central Govn. power

      Key words:

      Inherent power- automatic power granted to a person just because they are who they are.(king)

      Republic - Latin - "res publical" - of or for the people

      Monarchy - Greek - "one high one" - (king or queen)

      Washington's 2nd term at an end chooses not to run again

      Presidential Election won by John Adams (moderate Federalist) defeats Thomas Jefferson.

      New vice-president is T. Jefferson

      Federalist control Congress


      Electoral college -- a group put together for the purpose of electing the president. After election group is disbanded. This is to keep bribery and intimidation out of the election.

      Current day group consists of # of representatives and senators = # electoral votes
      Not stated in the Constitution how to select the electors - popular vote has become the unofficial standard

      1797-98

      France starts attacking U.S. merchant ships. Adams sends an envoy to speak to represtentatives in France. U.S. come up against a "brick wall" and bribery.
      Adams and U.S citizens become angry -- Call General Washington out of retirement.

      Federalist also worried that Jefferson and his party are plotting revolution and sedition because of their sympathy with France. And the publish articles put out by the Democratic-Republicans saying that Adams and Hamilton are closet Monarchists. (These papers were encouraged and often paid for by Jefferson)
