People don't view Sweeney Todd as too much of a threat. I think the negative sentiment has more to do with fans of the show being worried about how it will be transferred to the screen. Also, it's almost all singing, of a very difficult musical score, and the lead actors aren't singers. That worries and upsets some people. Think of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, who they cast over Julie Andrews even though Andrews originated the role on Broadway. And she was a singer; I'm not sure if Audrey was able to sing, but I know she was mostly dubbed for that movie. People really saw that as a snub to Andrews.
Not only did Julie Andrews win that year (for Mary Poppins), Audrey Hepburn was completely snubbed and didn't even get a nomination. People were that pissed off about the casting. |
