Knocked Up!

Ok, it is time for the academy to start awarding comedies. Yes Little Miss Sunshine was a great movie, but why wont the academy embrace gross-out comedies? Starting with 1998, There's Something About Mary was incredible, but completely ignored. 2004- Mean Girls, you can argue all you want, but that movie was extremely well written. Finally in 2005, The 40 Year Old Virgin had the freshest script with top-notch comedy acting. At the least, it should have been nominated for original screenplay, but the academy will not embrace this type of movie? Why not? Specifically with the 40 Year Old Virgin, the jokes were crude, vulgar, insulting, but never once stupid. This movie should have been nominated in the writing categories. Now, the academy has a chance to cover its mistake by nominating Knocked Up for original screenplay. This movie, just like the type of humor in 40 Year Old Virgin (not stupid) is phenominal, with every scene leaving you in tears from laughter. Comedy found in Ben Stiller movies shouldnt get recognition, but this type of humor should. Knocked Up at the Oscars!

Judd in Bug

Ashley Judd gives the bravest most raw performance that i've seen in years. Bug didn't do so well because of the marketing, but her performance was top notch.

I don't know why you think mean girls even would get a chance at the academy awards! Yes it was an enjoyable movie, but it was pure hit and miss. And just because the movie had good lines, doesn't mean it was written well. Scripts have to form well rounded characters. These characters were there for the gags and stereotypical girl warfare, and nothing else. I have to agree with you on the 40 year old virgin tidbit though.

An absolute contender

Regardless of it being a comedy 'Knocked Up' was and will be easily one of the years best films. It has been met with universal praise from both audiences and critics and I do think it has a legit shot at being nominated for Best Picture. Judd Apatow is highly respected for the projects he has created, and this film just increases his stock. No question this film is a lock for Best Original Screenplay Nomination, as well as an outside shot at a Best Picture Nomination. I also think that Leslie Mann could garner support for her supporting performance. Heigl's performance is a lead performance, to consider it a supporting role would be incorrect.

Knocked Up should get a nod for Best Original Screenplay but I dunno on Katherine Heigl, she was good but I cant see her or anyone from the cast really as Oscar nominees. Maybe nominated at the Sag for best ensemble?

Simpsons for best animated movie, it is a given, longest running animated comedy and even one of the longest running shows in TV!

Altough similar to Knocked Up, it's more of the academy's taste. Adrienne Shelly could earn a posthumous nomination for screenplay. Keri Russell is also brilliant and Andy Griffith olso is great.

I'm thinking that a screenplay nomination for both films is a likelyhood. I'd really like to see Knocked Up be recognized in the Supporting categories (for Paul Rudd and Lesile Mann) along with Best Picture (a long shot but it is my favorite film so far this year.

More likely is 'Ratatouille' for Best Picture. I am predicting and wishing that this will be the first animated film film since 'Beauty and the Beast' to get the nod. I think that they are arguably the two finest animated films ever.

Mean was a brilliantly biting satire, that will remain one of the best teen films of all time. Also the Academy skipped out on Scream and Clueless, because they were under teen (or comedy or horror). The voters are so stuffy

Scream should have been nominated. It was more than just some dumb teen slasher flick it actually had a great script, great performances, and it was funny and scary at the same time.

Once, the quasi-musical with glen hansford and marketa irglova was and is the best movie i have seen all year. The possiility for BP, Actress or Actor are slim. But the film should be recognized at least for original song. I would love if it did garner more, but it will depend on whether people remember it come oscar time (like Little Miss Sunshine).

A Mighty Heart

No score for this post
June 23 2007, 6:30 PM

I just back from seeing A Mighty Heart. All I can say is that is THE best film of 2007 thus far.

If Angelina Jolie does not capture a nomination for Best Actress I will be pretty angry with the Academy. Jolie gives easily the best performance by an actress within the last 2 or 3 years. I thought she was ten times better than Helen Mirren's Oscar-winning turn last year (although I thought Mirren's performance was way over rated and really not THAT good).

I also thought the film worked way better than last year's United 93. Both are alike, in the sense that the ending is known by everyone walking in to see the movie. Again, I though United 93 was not that good of a film and I never really got all the awards love it received this last awards season.

So, as far as acting nominations go from the summer movies, I really hope to see Jolie among the Actress nominees, and I would be thrilled to see her win another Oscar.

Jolie for Best Actress

I agree with you. Angelina Jolie has given one of the best, if not the best performance from an actress in the last couple of years. She went places in this role I didn't know she was capable of going. This was a performance of a lifetime and if she isn't recognized come oscar time I will systematically start hurting people. What people? I don't know but her lack of nomination will seriously piss me off.

I saw "A Mighty Heart" and I agree with you about Jolie. Right now I would think that she has to be considered a strong possibility for a nomination. I few things might hurt her:

1. "A Mighty Heart" is not doing too well at the Box Office yet.

2. This is still early. By next fall, this great performance may be forgotten (happens all the time).

3. A very small but very vocal group is calling her peformance a 'blackface' one. They are criticizing the casting even though the real Mariane Pearl is only one-quarter black and half white (and one-quarter Asian).

Blackface? If Mariane Pearl really is only one-quarter black than that is absolutely ridiculous. Were they supposed to find someone with the exact ethnicity (Dutch-Jewish-Afro-Cuban-Chinese)? Or is it if the character has any black blood at all a black actor has to play them?

Anyone think Felicity Huffman in Georgia Rule deserves a nomination? I thought Lindsay Lohan and Jane Fonda were ok and could get nominations but Felicity out shined them all in my opinion.

I'm still angry she didn't get the award for Transamerica so maybe this is her 2nd chance?

Amen, on the Georgia Rule thing, that movie was crap. I'm particuarly interested in "Ratatouille". I know it is an animated film, but maybe the Academy can make up for the overlooking of "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles" and give a good movie a chance, and not automatically disclude it just because it is a cartoon.

It stinks that Chris Cooper for BREACH is being passed over. A suprisingly good film, but with a horrible release date. He was very good along with the screenplay and score. Very good, but easily forgotten with the general public.

They're not "cartoons" animation is just another art form, it is NOT a genre. An animated movie can still be nominated for Best Picture, just like a foreign film and a documentry

-What I meant above is that no animated film will be nominated for Best Picture again. Animated films are still TECHNICALLY eligible. And I agree that fairly often an animated film is one of the best movies of the year.

-But now that there is a separate category, Academy voters feel they can honor a good animated film without using up a spot on the top five.

-When "Beauty and the Beast" was nominated for Best Pic, there was no separate category.

-In other words it can happen, but it won't happen.

-Having said that, "Ratatouille" is a shoo-in for Best Animated film (I'm biased of course)
