I believe that everybody thinks that the best actress race is closed with Blanchett, Christie, Cotillard, Linney, Kidman, etc and everybody is forgetting the power of Hilary Swank, she could be this year's Zellweger/Bridget Jones, with her performance in P.S: I love you, and also everybody is overlooking Belén Rueda for The orphanage who seems to be really magnificent and heartbreaking in that horror film.
My predictions for best actress at this point are:
1. Laura Linney - The savages
2. Marion Cotillard - La vie en rose
3. Belén Rueda - The orphanage
4. Hilary Swank - PS: I love you
5. Ellen Page - Juno

Oh you're so lucky, I'm in Alberta, Canada, I doubt I'll ever see the film in theatres. Can you post about Cusack's performance after the screening?? Thanks thanks.

Yeah, sure. I'm seeing it at the London Film Festival next month and I'm going to have coverage on www.oscarobsession.blogspot.com . I should have something up on Grace is Gone right after I see it.

He might be in it a long time, but Hal Holbrook is great in his role in Into The Wild. I wouldn't be surprised if you saw his name in the best supporting actor category.

gone baby gone looks to be a great film with great performances, it will get a little buzz but i doubt it will get anymore than one or 2 noms if any, thought it looks to be well deserving.

Gone Baby Gone looks great, indeed. But, given its from the same author, do you think the Academy would pass it up b/c its so similar to Mystic river? in the trailer the setting looks EXACTLY the same. buildings, streets, etc.

I have to agree with you about Black Snake Moan, Johnny. No doubt the general public hasn't even heard of this movie, and many viewers that did see it wrote it off as a movie "with Christina Ricci running around in her underwear", nothing more. But this was a terrific film. I just watched it again on DVD the other night. Samuel L. Jackson is wonderful, in a role that is different, Christina Ricci also turned in a good performance and so many great old blues tunes were played (many which were performed by Jackson himself).
Unfortunately, this is not the kind of movie that gets Oscar attention. It will be one of those sleepers that will perhaps eventually be rediscovered by more people.
