I'm very much anticipating Juno because I loved Thank You For Smoking, although I don't see this being a Best Picture contender yet. After the Golden Globes, maybe.
I think Atonement will be the champ if it lives up to the talk. If not, Charlie Wilson's War may surprise. This one's not on the list and may be too divisive, but There Will Be Blood may yet surprise. I'm thinking not. With the exception of a nomination for Daniel Day-Lewis (and maybe Paul Dano) this one could most likely be out.
Sweeney Todd has a lot of hype now after last month's early screening and with last night's Evening With Tim Burton at Lincoln Center, in which clips were shown of three key musical numbers (these clips are now circulating the Internet), the buzz is growing. Write-ups of the evening have been very positive and all of them highly praise Johnny Depp. That being said, only 17 minutes of a 1-3/4 hour film were shown. Judgments can't really be made until everyone has seen the entire thing. But despite the opinion of many that it will be snubbed, this one may yet end up snagging lots of nominations, including Best Picture, if it lives up to the hype. Unless some of the academy voters absolutely refuse to watch the movie because it was done by Tim Burton.

Isn't it funny how most of the same people always post(me, Alison, Bryce, Adam..etcgo on most forums and you'll notice about 8 people who always post lol) right now my #1 is There Will Be Blood, I really persoanlly don't think Atonement looks "all that" I am more anticipating it just for all its hype. Sweeney and Charlie Wilson's I have said several times I except both to flop. Juno i think looks good not great(I thought the same about Little Miss Sunshine It was nothing special to me and actually the end depressed me EVERYTHING went wrong!) Kite Runner looks very good to me but I have a feeling It will be a a little too on the melodramatic side for me. Two films I really want to see not on the list are Youth Without Youth(Copoola's comeback?) and The Bucket List(Reiner's comeback?)

I have the same thought about CWW, but we may be surprised. Or not.
Sweeney really does have a lot of good buzz now. The following link on Awards Daily summarizes Nathaniel R's (from The Film Experience) reaction to last night's Lincoln Center Sweeney shindig in the link below. To quote her, "he sort of drops the Depp bomb". But for the most part he has good things to say about the movie.
Then again, you may be right. Will the Academy once again snub Tim Burton?
The other thing that many people haven't considered, or spoken much about, is the source material. With Sweeney Todd Stephen Sondheim created a masterpiece. But Sondheim isn't for everyone. A lot of people don't 'get him'. His music is not 'easy' for the average listener. It has difficult and unusual harmonies and rhythms, his lyrics aren't easy to get your tongue around, there are lots of patter songs (songs with quickly-enunciated sung dialogue is the best way I can explain it - think Gilbert & Sullivan).
But there are tons of fans of Burton, Depp and of the show who will see this movie, and at the very least it will have a modest box office draw. So, I don't think it will be a complete flop. Whether it will flop in terms of Oscars is yet to be seen. At the very least it will certainly get some artistic/tech awards.

I am ready to see "The Kite Runner" if the movie is as good as the book then I think it could really be big... not to set on Atonement making it to the big five but we shall see.

Alison Flynn, don't you frequently post on Awards Daily, too? If so, awesome.
I'm most lookng forward to THERE WILL BE BLOOD and ATONEMENT. I don't think SWEENEY TODD or CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR are going to be the awards gems people are hoping for. In fact, while I think SWEENEY will have several tech nods, I don't think CHARLIE is a lock for anything.

Hi, Free. Yes, I do post comments on Awards Daily. I've seen some of your comments there.
You're one of the few who isn't on the Sweeney bandwagon that many people have been getting on lately. Right now I think it could go either way. And 17 minutes of a film do not necessarily mean it's in the bag. We need to see how the entire movie is received by critics and audiences after it's released in theaters. That includes those viewers that are coming in sort of cold to the movies. Remember, the people who've seen the prescreening and the Lincoln Center clips are journalists and Sondheim/Sweeney/Depp/Burton fans who have been salivating to see the movie, even if it's just clips.

I'm looking forward to Sweeney Todd much less now that I've heard Depp's underwhelming voice (though I'm sure that many will love him), but I'll definitely be seeing it.

Even if you don't like Depp's voice, from what I've read there is still plenty to enjoy about the film. His acting is excellent, I'm sure, and those who have seen it have said as much. The singing is passable in my opinion. There will be people who love it.
I don't love what I heard but I think it will work fine on film, and the acting will come through in the songs, which is what it's all about. Although Helena Bonham-Carter has a light, weaker voice than we're used to for Lovett I actually think her voice is very pretty and sweet, at least from the little I heard. I may change my opinion after I've heard her sing one of her solo songs.

I have seen TWBB. I liked it, especially the acting, but that's just me. Just like " Blood ", Sweeney Todd's dark tone may be a turn off for the voters as well. They are so predictably politically correct, so both of those film's might not get the vote. I wouldn't doubt it if they voted for In The Valley Of Elah. The P.C. vote. It's going to be weird, that there isn't really a hero type or redemtion character in the lot. I guess you could say the most likeable character is Chris from Into The Wild. There are a lot of character's this year that aren't that great of people. HHMM.... Hanks, Mortenson, Day-Lewis, Depp, Washington, Crowe for 3:10, Bardem, aren't playing very good people. A lot of baddies up for the acting category this year.
Personally I want to see Youth Without Youth, Charlie Wilson's War and The Bucket List. Oscar Igloo doesn't have Jack, Morgan or the movie in any of their tiers. That's kind of weird. But I remember when Will Smith came out of nowhere in December and got a nomination. I bet this one may be a sneaker and you know Igloo knows it too. Ha!

Yeah, it's funny that the same people are frequently this site and AwardsDaily. I have no connection to the film industry at all; I just love movies. This is my favorite time of the year for films, precisely because the studios are pushing all their films for Oscar consideration; they save the best for the fall and Christmas.
As for December, I cannot wait for "There Will Be Blood". I am anticipating that because I am a big fan of PT Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis. "Boogie Nights" was a film that stayed with me for a long time (and not just because of the sex), and "Magnolia" is probably one of my favorites; it's an ambitious film with a simple theme, but it works beautifully. Day-Lewis is a solid actor who has turned in memorable performances ("My Left Foot", "The Age of Innocence", "In the Name of the Father", "Gangs of New York"). The previews of "There Will Be Blood" have me absolutely convinced that I will enjoy this film, even though I will probably loathe the characters and the things they will do to each other.
That's probably why it has little chance at the Oscars. Assuming it delivers for me personanlly, I would love to see a nod for Day-Lewis, an adapted screenplay nod for Anderson, maybe a couple of technical nods. Director and/or Picture would be nice, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Still, history has taught us that there's been many Oscar winners that don't really stand the test of time ("The Greatest Show on Earth", "Around the World in Eighty Days", "Kramer vs. Kramer"), but films that have remained classics, regardless of recognition ("High Noon", "Giant", "Apocalypse Now"). I have a strong feeling this will apply for "There Will Be Blood".

Very true, srh1son. I've seen The Greatest Show on Earth. It was certainly a spectacle, but it also, for a lack of a better way to describe it, weighed 10 tons. And Kramer vs. Kramer is completely off the radar. Although one person mentioned it recently on one of the Oscar sites - maybe it was you. They said that it was a movie that they just didn't see as an Oscar winner - even after watching it agan after it won.
Many of the timeless masterpieces never won Oscars. Which brings up another argument that many have made: Why should the Oscars then matter? But we all know that they do.

The Bucket List...hands down. Simply because it features my two favorite actors...the best in the business. Plus, early word is that the film is great, with Nicholson and Freeman perfectly cast together.
Do I think that it will generate Oscar Buzz? Probably not, althought I do think one of the two leads have a shot at a Golden Globe nod. I would love to see Jack and Morgan nominated side by side for an Oscar, though, especially since Nicholson was snubbed last year for The Departed. No only should he have been nominated, he should have won Best Supporting Actor for 2006.
