A few possible over hype

I know this last year it was the year of the " dark " films. There may be a couple a films we are getting nutty over. I think if a couple don't end up being nominated could be Revolutionary Road. It's not a pleasant story and both lead actors have other films out this year that are creating buzz as well. Frost/Nixon could possibly only get one nod, and that would be for Langella. But I doubt it will only get one nod. The writing will be honored as well. So far I think these two movies are the most hyped that could result in casualties. What we should be thinking about is the long shot nominee we never see coming, like Tommy Lee Jones last year. Who will that actor/actress be in 08 ? Brendan Gleeson ? Jill Scott ?

I can say that Frost/Nixon is not being overhyped, it is a fantastic film Langella and screenplay are almost certain nods...however in terms of picture and director it will really come down to how good other contenders like body of lies, and benjamin button for example are. Regarding Revolutionary Road, having read the script which is great I can say that I think it is more an actors film and screenplay but not a best picture film, perhaps it will be but from reading it i can say that it is a lot different then people think it will be i didnt expect it to be how it was. Body of Lies after reading it I feel could be recieved amazingly or it could become an American Gangster the script is very good it will all depend on the pacing(what i feel was the weakest part of American Gangster) and how Scott handles the material, it is very risky and could go both ways...the film I feel is being overhyped after reading is Doubt, it seems like a very good film with great performances but not a great film...

i think we are KILLING "Revolutionary Road." Bates role is insignificant, the storyline is downright depressing (but very good). i think many people outside of this board (because it seems like people on this board know what to expect from this film) will be expecting leo and winslet in another Titanic, but rather than tears of romantic joy will find tears of sheer sadness.

I happen to believe that people are over-hyping Blindness just because it's a Fernando Meirelles film. The plot is not all that fascinating, and what people are really going crazy over is Julianne Moore. Some are even saying that she's a lock for Best Actress. She does tend to make crap from time to time (The Forgotten, Freedomland, Next?). I even just saw in Savage Grace recently and I hated it. As for Meirelles, I wasn't all that impressed by his last film The Constant Gardener. Another film is Body of Lies and again it's because of the director. The academy hasn't been recognizing Ridley Scott's films like they used to. Last year, all American Gangster got was a Best Supporting Actress nomination for the like nine-minute performance by Ruby Dee and a Best Art Direction nom. I think Body of Lies is going to suffer the same fait.

Andrew F you are so right people are going to be very surrised when they see how dark and depressing(and short) Revolutionary Road is. Josh, I agree with you and as we've seen so far according to the reviews on IMDb Blindness is not going over very well, they are saying it is tiresome with some moments but they simply tried too hard.

Revolutionary Road. When it was announced that Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were reuniting on the screen, there was already talk of Oscar. A movie with such high expectations is almost bound to fail. I think there are still some who see another Titanic mega hit. But a film about self indulgent people and marital disccord in 1950's suburbia America probably won't have mainstream appeal.

I completely agree with Revolutionary Road. I would be very surprised if it lives up to the hype.

Well Sam Mendes hasn't been able to score Best Picture since he last won in 1999 for American Beauty. So I'll also be very surprised if the film lives up to the hype. I wonder if Road To Perdition and Jarhead's chances were ruined by hype, especially Road To Perdition. I happen to think that film was underrated.

Austrailia is being overhyped, but I feel like it will only be beautiful technically and will lack everything else.

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is now officially being over-hyped, in my opinion.

i think that Curious Case is probably going to be the one film that doesnt dissappoint. Fincher finally has a film that is baity, and the release gives it awards attention. We all know that if Zodiac were released in November last year instead of Early in the year, it would have scored nominations galore.

Revolutionary road as a whole, might dissapoint, but it is SURE to get lead acting nods for winslet and dicaprio, only because from what i have heard from people who know the story, its a sad, period piece, which means an Actor's Showcase.

Austrailia i have an intense feeling will suceed. A lot of you are predicting failure, but i see HUgh Jackman and Nicole Kidman as frontrunners, and This film will probably be one of the best this year.

The one i think will fail, is Frost/Nixon. I just have a feeling that the movie is too soon after the play. I dunno i just have a feeling.

And the one i think will surprise everyone is Synecdoche, New York. Think about it. Charlie Kaufman is the best screenwriter working today. He would only want to direct his best script. Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine, and Being John Malkoviche were some of the best , most original screenplays yet, then why arent our expectations for Synecdoche, New York extremely high?

i like the fact that we are not holding Synecdoche, New York very high because regardless, this film will probably end up in one way or another, with a positive outcome.
personally, i think that Leo's nod this year will not be for RR, but instead for BOL, but i would not be surprised with either one.
