They're pretty good although I'm not very sure about Sherlock Holmes.

So far, I'm predicting The Lovely Bones, Shutter Island, Nine, Taking Woodstock and The Human Factor for Best Picture (also my five most anticipated this year... what a coincidence)

LOL above poster I agree there...

Still don't quite think the site (or anyone I've talked to) understand just how baity Leo's role is in Shutter Island, its not an action picture at all, its a psychological mystery character thriller. I know this is a huge chance but I'm putting Leo as LOCK to win at this point in my book the role is just too damn perfect for awards and perfect for him to be overlooked.

Sherlock Holmes is too popcorn and a little far fetched from the normal Holmes tradition ( now he's a martial artist bad ass butt kicking machine ? ) to be a considered for Oscar contention. It will be a fun movie no more than that.
How is Colin Farrell in lead contention according to awardscircuit, when it's Jeff Bridges movie ? Colin is a supporting player in Crazy Heart. Now in Dirt Music for Farrell, I can see that. In fact in Carzy Heart, it's actually a very baity type role, in that it's about a wayward alcoholic, over the hill country and western singer that gets a possible second chance. Bridges hasn't been up for a lead nomination in a very long time. This could be the one.

Whenever Into The Storm comes out, people will be buzzing about Brendan Gleeson's performance as Winston Churchill. Emily Watson in Within The Whirlwid looks like a lock for a nomination. She looks phenomenal. True story about overcoming and being unjustly sent to the Gulag for over 10 years during Stalin's reign. Christopher Plummer as the famous author Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station. Very baity as well.

"its a psychological mystery character thriller"

Not to sound...I don't know, but that doesn't sound baity at all.

Let's not give away too much about Shutter Island. For those of you who haven't read the book, please do if interested. It's fantastic. I couldn't put it down for a minute. DiCaprio's character does have great stuff and although I won't go as far as to say he's a lock to win, I'm betting he will be a contender.

Oh, as for the predicts so far, they're alright. I can't expect too much, it is early, but I can say I'm not feeling Sherlock Holmes.

AJ in order to inform you of the baitiness of the character I would have to give some severe plot spoilers, so I don't think people are going to realize his potential even from the trailer and the shock of it will further his chances of being nominated or winning.

I second that Emily Watson comment. If you aren't impressed with that performance what would impress you ? She looks awesome in it. Go to youtube for yourself and check it out.

As for the people bringing up Shutter Island. It's good you are not spoiling it. It was a great book and I hope it was adapted properly. I just finsidhed the latest from Lehane, and it is also a great book that has it's rights already sold to be made into a film.

Andrew, i agree with you when it comes to Leo, but i for one am glad he is not being overhyped for obvious reasons. let others be overhyped, but like i said before, Leo is in a perfect position in my opinion.

Supporting Actor is never a weak year the academy just fails to recognize a lot of amazing work here in my opinion. There are already 5 people who I would have no problem nominating sadly probably none of them will receive a nominations...except for possibly Haley.

I respectfully disagree, last year was incredibly weak. With the exception of Ledger, none of the performances I saw (and I'm pretty sure I saw all the buzzed ones) were good enough.

Well, anonymous, could you list your top five or ten supporting actors from last year?

I happen to agree with Andrew (lol), considering that Best Supporting Actor is almost always the best acting category. They're typically the characters you come to love - even if you don't like the film.

That's what makes them so special. For last year, my top five was:

1) Heath Ledger (TDK)
2) Aaron Eckhart (TDK)
3) Brad Pitt (Burn After Reading)
4) Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road)
5) Josh Brolin (Milk)

On top of all that, I had a hard time deciding who should have been nominated, since Philip Seymour Hoffman was incredible in Doubt. I thought that Richard Dreyfuss was fantastic in W., that both Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. were great in Tropic Thunder, and that Liev Schreiber was fantastic in Defiance.

I've already listed ten great supporting actor performances from last year, and can think of at least five more which would have easily deserved recognition had it not been for the other nominees this year.

Even though no more words can be said about Ledger, he made me fear and love the Joker at the same time. I have never experienced that from many performances, but I have a feeling that it's roles like these which are cherished by many.
