Of course, we just got to see the ACCA winners for 2006, but it really takes a long time to find out what everybody thinks. Here are my picks for Best Picture from 2000-2008. Please share yours and why.
2000: Gladiator- No contest. Traffic runs a distant second, but Gladiator all the way. Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott's finest hour. Awesome performances from Joaquin Phoenix (before he went nuts), Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed (criminally overlooked), and Derek Jacobi. Great story, great looking, great action. What's not to like?
2001: A Beautiful Mind- Hard choice between this and LOTR, but LOTR didn't have great performances in it like Crowe's and Connelly's. Fascinating, touching movie.
2002: Gangs of New York- Almost flawless look at 19th Century NY. Intense, gripping, well-shot, awesome song. mind-blowing performance from the great Daniel Day Lewis. Closest Cameron Diaz ever came to acting.
2003: LOTR- Easiest choice. Mystic River is the only other one that comes to mind.
2004: The Aviator- I will never understand how this lost to that depressing, tearjerker Million Dollar Baby. A perfectly made film with one of the best casts ever assembled.
2005: Crash- Barely beats Munich. Brokeback wasn't even in contention for me. One of the best ensemble films ever. May go down in history as an Academy homophobe winner, but wasn't the subject matter in Crash fairly risky as well?
2006: The Departed- Forget about Scorsese being snubbed. This is still the Best Picture of the Year, way better than that Crash-wannabe Babel.
2007: Atonement- Yeah, I know I stand alone here, but I think it's the ultimate literary adaptation. James McAvoy and Keira Knightley were completely snubbed.
2008: Slumdog Millionaire- Only film I have ever seen to make the underdog love story completely work. Great film out of a group of weak nominees.
Just for fun, I think the Best Picture of the Decade is City of God. It would go on my 2003, but it wasn't nominated.

2000- Traffic. Intriquing and compelling story with incredible performances (especially from del Toro, who more than deserved that oscar)
2001- Mulholland Dr. Lynch's masterpiece. Leaves you breathless
2002- The Hours. Amazing character driven story. Julianne Moore was robbed of the oscar for her portrayl of Laura Brown
2003- Mystic River. Has you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Penn, Robbins and Harden give career best performances.
2004- Closer. Finally, an adult love story that reveals the raw emotions behind relationships. Owen and Portman were both robbed of their respective oscars.
2005- Brokeback Mountain. The most compelling love story I've ever seen. You feel the pain. It's a film everyone should experience.
2006- Babel. A multilayered story of great depth. Outstanding performances all around.
2007- Atonement. Beautiful flim--both visually and plot wise. Knightley, Ronan and Redgrave are astounding and heartbreaking.
2008- The Dark Knight. The biggest snub in oscar history. Ledger gives the best performance of the decade. Best Film of the year and of the decade (imo)

So glad to see that I'm not the only one giving Brad Pitt some love for Burn After Reading. He was hilarious, and I think he was the rightful winner of the Supporting Actor award. Heath was good, but his death gave him a win which maybe didn't correspond with the best performance of last year. Who would have figured the Academy does that?
