Oscar winning films sometimes spawn others.

Federico Fellini's surreal semi-autobiopic 8 1/2 (about an Italian director much like Fellini himself) was nominated for Best Director and won best foreign film in 1963.

This inspired Bob Fosse to make his own surreal semi-autobiopic "All That Jazz" in 1979 (about an American film director and choreographer much like Fosse himself). The title was taken from a song from his broadway musical "Chicago" which came out in the mid-seventies and essentially flopped (even though Fosse was always proud of it). "All That Jazz" won a few Oscars and was nominated for Picture, Director and Actor.

The success of "All That Jazz" inspired Arthur Kopit to adapt an Italian play based on Fellini's 8 1/2 into a stage musical called "Nine". (They went the extra half-step and made it into a musical). It was pretty successful.

The success of these last two, plus recent events in the media inspired Ann Reinking to try to revive "Chicago" on broadway in the mid-nineties and this time it was a resounding hit. This, of course, resulted in a film version, directed by Rob Marshall, which won many Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress.

The success of "Chicago" and other recent movie musicals helped give the green light to a movie version of "Nine" also directed by Rob Marshall. If it lives up to expectations we have a long line of Oscar friendly movies spawning each other.

"8 1/2" - "All That Jazz" - "Chicago" - "Nine"

(We can also throw the much nominated 1974 movie "Lenny" in there, you probably know why)
