All of the predictions are just really horrible. Whoever does them needs to be ousted because they are just crap. They were way off the mark last year, and the same goes for 2007.

I thought they were pretty good in 2007 (with the exception of them having Charlie Wilson's War up until the last minute) because of course we didn't have these new editors running the damn thing, but yea your right, 2008 was just off and now this year, it kinda sluggish because HELLO - no acting nods for Nine??? I seriously believe Nine will be the film to recieve the most nominations. At least, they got that damn Sherlock Holmes out of the main competition. Even in a year with 10 Best Picture nominees, that's not going to happen.

I completely agree. Nine has a possible 5 nominees who are likley contenders for acting awards in Day-Lewis, Dench, Cruz, Cottilard and Kidman.
They need to get rid of Skarsgaard, he's not getting a nod when Mulligan and Molina are capturing the film's buzz, and put up Day-Lewis. And until reviews start coming in, dump Sandler for Depp whose performance is a career best in my oppinion. Saw the film last week and Depp is just phenominal, it's his most studied performance ever.
As far as Best Actress goes, Cruz is not a contender for Broken Embraces as she is not on the level of her performances in Volver and Vicky C. Barcelona.
Pfeiffer is basically out, the movie has a bad release date, got so so reviews and has no buzz right now. So i'd replace those two with Abbie Cornish for Bright Star, and Precious' Gabourney Sidibe.
Best Supporting Actor is good right now with the exception of Richard Kind, there has been no word on A Serious Man in a while, and despite Bardem winning in 07 the Coens dont have the best track record of getting sup. actor nods with the exception of William H. Macy in fargo. I'd replace him with Paul schneider in Bright Star a film that has already seen favorable reviews for Schneider and his costars.
Best Supporting Actress is a mess, the predictions are horrible.
Emily Mortimer's character in Shutter Island is nothing but a plot device. She has no more than 2 scenes tops. Rachel Weisz probably is not a viable contneder since Saoirse Ronan is on the brink of Lead or Supporting, and due to her age supporting is a bit more likely right now. Michelle Williams is viable but not incredibly likely. The last actress Scorsese got a nomination was Sharon Stone nearly 15 years ago, he's more of an Actor's director rather than actress as of the past decade. With those three out, i'd put in Judi Dench for Nine, the Academy adores her and she is spotlighted in the trailer as being in a wry more cuttingly humorous performance which the Oscars will ove. I'd also add Patricia Clarkson who was excellent in Whatever Works, and given that the Academy likes her, Woody's track record for Supporting Actress and her buzzworthy involvement with Susan Sarandon and SNL, she is a viable contender. Lastly I'd put in Marion Cottilard who was just great, fantastic even in Public Enemies. This movie combined with Nine in November is going to make her the next big European star after Penelope Cruz as of late.
What I'm trying to say is, these predictions suck.

Matt Damon should definitely be in the top ten as he is way more likely to get a nod than Jeff Bridges, Ben Whishaw and Adam Sandler. Magidson I guess thinks differently and is probably unfit to run this site likewise. Just a humble oppinion from somebody who actually remebers what made The Oscar Igloo great, yet was forced to watch it destryo itself through a new staff, name and design.

I actually don't run the site, Clay does...same goes for the predictions. Yes, I have high hopes for Funny People, based on the script, but that has nothing to do with how Clay makes his picks...also, since I'm dispelling rumors, I was on staff when it was The Oscar Igloo, and so were others of us, so it's not like the name change did much...the only real difference is Johnny no longer edits...

Somehow i kinda doubt they'll be able to swindle Saoirse Ronan into supporting. I read the screenplay AWHILE ago and unlike say, The Sixth Sense, where they could make the case "Well, We'll just say Willis is the lead and we'll say Osmont is supporting."...Ronan comes off as the sole central character in the movie w/ the most actual screentime and a voiceover throughout the entire film. I think Wahlberg and Tucci came off as close seconds in terms of screentime(its hard to remember)....but its her story through and through and she's at the center of everything. So i think she'll go lead to open up supporting for Weisz and Sarandon. And i'm not sure in this case young age = supporting since she already has an Oscar nomination under her belt...which may validate a lead campaign.
But with all that being said....i'm sure worse category fraud has happened before...so who the hell knows.

Everybody really needs to calm down. These predictions in the end are the combination of buzz and personal opinion of the editors and considering its only June, who knows how far off these predictions are. Now there are some things that I disagree with. I think that both Judi Dench and Daniel Day-Lewis should be in the top 5 for their performances in Nine as they were highlighted most in the trailer. I like the boldness of putting Sandler in the top 5. Ever since I've heard of the film, I've thought that he could have a chance and I'm glad someone else agrees with me. Bright Star should be in the top 5 for Best Picture as well as Best Actress for Abbie Cornish. Michelle Pfieffer can stay in the top 5 for now but should be very low and should probably be bounced in the next round of predictions for Sidibe or Watson. The best supporting actor category is fine. The best supporting actress seems to be taking the most heat but I don't think its that bad. I'm about halfway through the book Shutter Island and it is true that Emily Mortimer is really just a plot device with only one scene so far. However, that doesn't discount her from a nomination as that scene is very impressive. Also, doesn't everybody remember that Viola Davis earned a nomination last year for a performance that was just one scene. She was in the top 5 on this site all year and nobody complained. Also, I think that Mortimer has a better chance than Williams unless Williams' role is really expanded and heightened in the film. So everybody just chill out and relax. The predictions will get better as the season progresses.
And a special note to the Anonymous poster: Martin Scorcese has done surprisingly well with getting nominations for female performances. He's earned nominations for actresses in The Aviator, Casino, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, The Age of Innocence, Taxi Driver and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. He's more than just an man's director. Also, despite your insistence, Whatever Works and Public Enemies have been earning mainly mixed reviews and shouldn't be pushed as hard in the acting categories as you think (with the exception of Marion Cotillard who also has Nine giving her buzz).

The difference between Viola Davis and Mortimer is that Davis wa a real fully fleshed out character who has an astonishing impact on the film, Mortimer is playing a plot device whose impact is minimal in the end of the story, once you finish the book everything will become clear.
But yeah, I think anonymous was just saying that, well he forgot Blanchett, but since his comeback with Gangs of New York this decade, he has been primarily an actors director

Mortimer's role isn't comparable with Davis' role. I mean, Rachel Solando is nothing but a plot device and at the very EARLY of the film, you find out Mortimer is not a real Rachel Solando! This is not even a spoiler.

Annoy? and people give **** to others who post anonymously (it's more than one person), as if annoy is a real name. People, if you see any post with a name that seems new, like GiGi, it doesn't mean we have a new member of this community (god knows nobody wants to be part of this site), it means that one of you people are posting under another name. Just wanted to show off the hypocrisy.
