What's your 10 least favorite Supporting Actress nominees?

And yes, winners can be included. wink.gif

01. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio - The Color of Money
Appalingly bad in how its a dull character being played by an actress who decides to play it even more dull than required. It doesn't help that she is in a movie that is quite average, and is outshone by the two lead males. While most performances on this list are dull with the actresses at least trying, Mastrantonio doesn't even seem to care and what comes out of it is the most eyebrow-raising, annoying nominations in Oscar's almost century-long history.

02. Brenda Vaccaro - Jacqueline Susann's Once is Not Enough
Whose dick did she suck to get this nomination? Seriously... I don't even need to explain, I will just let you watch a clip from her performance:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpYH6T9Tigc!!

03. Holly Hunter - The Firm
A nothing performance that a fantastic, natural actress like Hunter manages to turn into a cornball cariacature that lacks all credibility and passes way beyond being a human being into a plot-moving cliche. Hunter adds nothing to the role; no humanity, no affliction, no trust. She is in it for 6 minutes (out of a 154 minute film) and has a total of 20 scenes. Just shows how peppered around and useless her role is. Watch it here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XgtG7-BioY

04. Gloria Grahame - The Bad and the Beautiful
Beautiful woman, fantastic actress, proven herself time and again. However, in this now classic film she doesn't make even a bit of a impression. She comes, and goes, seemingly like she doesn't even want to spend time investing into such a flat and under-written character.

05. Leslie Browne - The Turning Point
A dull performance that came along with the many nomiantions for the well-recieved drama.

06. Penelope Milford - Coming Home
Read Leslie Browne.

07. Kay Medford - Funny Girl
Wait... she was in it? When? How long? Seriously....?

08. Ingrid Bergman - Murder on the Orient Express
Great actress, great movie. Why is the performance so darn forgettable and boring?

09. Ruby Dee - American Gangster
I love this woman. Should have been nominated for her work in Do the Right Thing and many other performance from her past filmography. But here? She spends 4 minutes of screentime doing nothing and then slapping Denzel Washington. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not bad by any chance, but all of these performances on this list from numbers 5 and on are just, well, dull.

10. Marjorie Rambeau - Torch Song
A blink-and-you-miss-it performance where the character is played typically as the "mother-of-the-now-diva" character we've seen so many times before and after this film. Nothing memorable here.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

HM 1: Joan Cusack - Working Girl
Has a few funny lines, but overall, she is a short, wasted presence in a film with other better, more rich, supporting performances.

HM 2: Edna May Oliver - Drums Along the Mowhawk
It's a strange, annoying performance in a mediocre film by an actress I expected more from. It's one of those performances that seems to chance character every other scene.

Had to do some research for this one. Honestly I haven't seen many movies where the supporting actress is the big story but I'll try anyway...

Ruby Dee - American Gangster
Abigail Breslin- Little Miss Sunshine

10. Whoopi Goldberg - Ghost
9. Catherine Keener - Being John Malkovich
8. Renée Zellweger - Cold Mountain
7. Gloria Stuart - Titanic, oh I know it stings.
6. Catherine Keener - Capote, you got it. I don't like her.
5. Viola Davis - Doubt
4. Jennifer Hudson - Dreamgirls
3. Judi Dench - Shakespeare in Love
2. Ruby Dee - American Gangster
1. Abigail Breslin- Little Miss Sunshine, I know. I'm cold.

I loved Keener in "BJM", but yeah, I also didn't like her in "Capote". Twas a nothing role, imo.

You didn't like Goldberg? sad.gif

Haha to be honest I couldn't find many supporting actress nominations/winners that I didn't like or that I have seen. I'll admit I did like Whoopi in the movie and found her to be funny. I just didn't find it to be Oscar worthy. Yeah that choice was kind of just thrown in there even if I didn't necessarily not like the performance.

I also don't understand how Keener was nominated for Capote. She did nothing, nada.

I disagree with the anti-Breslin statements tremendously. In fact, I felt that she was one of the stronger nominees that year in her category. Does anyone want to back up their dislike of Breslin? In a friendly manner, of course. happy.gif

(In No Particular Order)

Natalie Portman - Closer
I like her but her acting sorta sucks....

Abigail Breslin - Little Miss Sunshine
I'd actually have replaced her over Jennifer Hudson. She did nothing spectacular.

Ruby Dee - American Gangster
The slap was great. The acting no so much.

Renee Zellweger - Cold Mountain
I hated this performance so much...so actorishy and full of itself.

Sophie Okenedo - Hotel Rwanda
Great emotion but other than that...where's the substance behind the character?

Catherine Keener - Capote
Did nothing...AT ALL

Miyoshi Umeki - Sayonara
BORING!!!!

Jane Alexander - All the President's Men
BORINGER!!!!

Rosie Perez - Fearless
Good performance but nomination worthy?

Juliette Binoche - The English Patient
BORINGEST!!!!

Sure, I'll back it up. I think any girl below the age of 10, actor or not, probably could have done equally the same. Just my opinion though.

Yea I agree 100% acting like a 10 year old...when your a 10 year old...isn't acting. I mean when I was little I'd make little shorts all the time with my friends...we could all act just as well as she did in that film...I want to strongly disagree with Anonymous because I think Natalie Portman gives such a raw and incredible performance in Closer...from the start you fall in love with her along with the men in the film despite her flaws, and then she pours out her soul in a couple of the scenes. And its like heartbreaking this young girl who has had her heart broken time and time again and most view her as only a little slut stripper because thats what she happens to do.

You can definitely appreciate good acting from a child, in my humble opinion, just that most child actors aren't all that great...

Like imo, any actress could have played Breslin's role in LMS. Not any actor could have played Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense or Anna Paquin in The Piano.

Agreed about the latter two, though I was a Breslin fan, but to each his (or her) own...

Supposedly, Anna Paquin was kept away from "The Piano"'s actual storylines and plot points, so I'm so curious as to what the hell they told her to get such an on-the-spot and mature performance out of her because that girl nailed it.

Haley Joel Osment was excellent too, but the boy was creepy in real life. When he spoke, he spoke like a college kid... Haha.

I loved Breslin, but I do have to admit, pretty much anybody could have played the role as long as the girl held onto a sense of dislocation with normality. Of which Breslin seems to possess in practically all of her performance since "LMS"... :-|

Tony, what do you think of the performances of Matthew O'Leary in "Frailty" and Danielle Harris in "Halloween 4"? Out of random curiousity... lol

Yea to reiterate I realize now my thing was a little bland like "all child actors can act" yea I didnt mean that simply that in little Miss Sunshine, Breslin doesn't do anything that it would be difficult for a child to do as she was virtually just playing an everyday child. While I haven't seen The Piano still Haley Joel Is so fantastic in The Sixth Sense! now thats a mature and unchildlike performance

O'Leary is fantastic in Frailty. That movie is just well acted period, such a great cast. I had him right behind Buscemi that year in supporting. Jeremy Sumpter is good too. I can't remember Halloween 4 to save the life of me lol. I'm guessing the child actor in it was a hidden gem?

Saoirse Ronan was very goood in Atonement! She totally stole the show, spoke with a perfect English accent (she is Irish) and was just ten years old! I think she totally deserves her nomination!
