Outraged physicist leaves TV discussion
Posted: Wed Oct 31, 2007 2:06 pmby GertFroebe
On a popular german TV talkshow, called after the female moderator "Maischberger", the TV-science expert and physicist Joachim Bublath left the studio in the middle of a discussion about "Ufos, Engel und Außerirdische" (UFOs, Angels and Aliens).
Other guest were rock singer Nina Hagen, who claimed that a Ufo-expirience 23 years ago changed her life, Author Sabrina Fox who writes books about angels and Ufologist Johannes von Buttlar. Bublath's intention was to bring rationality into this discussion, but in the end he felt like in a "cabinet of oddities on october fest". He thought he was in a kind of a therapy. Bublath: "The question of why society gets more and more irrational and why it accepts such worldviews willingly, should have been asked." But that did not come up in the discussion.
Singer Nina Hagen said about Bublath it would "make her sick to sit next to someone who would ridicule everything" and changed the seat.
After Bublath knew that the discussion was pointless he stood up and left the studio. "That was a group that lives in this kind of worldview and earns money with it. My part was senseless." he said.

I hope I did translate well enough.

I am proud of him. It is not easy to take a stand against popularity. I imagine it is an even tougher decision to make in front of a camera.

"Dann fing Frau Hagen wieder mit ihren Ufos an"
"Then Mrs. Hagen started going on about her UFOs again"
A tough climate for reason I guess...

Very interesting, that article about censorship. Usually it is not that way and I am shocked about that. I have to write to the TV station and protest. Disgusting that the ZDF plays along with the enemies of reason.

That's awesome. I think more scientists who are asked to comment on ridiculous discussions like UFOs and ID should do this.
These are not legitimate topics for debate and we shouldn't treat them as such.

You might want to mention they have a great opportunity to broadcast a certain Channel 4 documentary...

Good idea!
BTW: Mrs. Hagen is known to be a very extroverted ans shrill person. In my opinion she often just likes the publicity.

The show will rerun on November 3rd at 23:30 o'clock. I am looking forward to that.
Bublath btw. was a big influence in my childhood. I always watched his TV-shows about dinosaurs, the universe and perished cultures. I loved it. I think that he is one of many reason that I am an atheist and defender of reason today.

Yes, I know Frau Hagen from her punk days and her liaison with one Mr. Herman Brood.
Bublath sounds like a TV personality that's worthwhile to watch!
