Mobile phones 'more dangerous than smoking'

Brain expert warns of huge rise in tumours and calls on industry to take immediate steps to reduce radiation

By Geoffrey Lean
Sunday, 30 March 2008

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.

The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.

It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long...

Mobile risk for mums-to-be

CHILDREN whose mothers use mobile phones while pregnant run a greater risk of behavioural problems, a new study says today. Youngsters exposed to phone radiation in the womb show an 80% rise in unruly behaviour.

Mobiles 'danger' for unborn tots

KIDS of mums who use mobiles while pregnant are more likely to have behavioural problems, a new report claims.

And mothers who use handsets around their toddlers will cause the same difficulties.

The study the biggest of its kind claims a mobile used regularly for more than ten years can also increase the risk of brain tumours.

Experts also warn heavy usage can seriously affect male fertility.

Some other experts urged caution over the report.

Prof Patricia McKinney, of the University of Leeds, called it a biased appraisal.

The review of 15 years of research into mobile phone health danger will be unveiled at the Radiation Research Trust Conference, which begins in London today.

It says kids exposed to phones pre-natally and in early childhood show an 80 per cent increase in behaviour problems.

Research says kids brains absorb a greater proportion of radiation emitted by mobiles due to skull formation.

The study says Department of Health guidance on minimising the use of mobiles among children under the age of 16 is not widely publicised.

Report author Graham Philips said: We strongly recommend the Government actively discourages mobile phone use by children, including making public advice leaflets readily available in NHS waiting rooms.

The findings summarise more than 100 research papers.

A 2005 study found handsets do not appear to boost the risk of brain cancer.

But Institute of Cancer Research experts could not rule out longer term hazards, as mobiles were relatively new.
There are now 70.67million mobiles in Britain, 16 per cent more than the population.

Cancer risk in mobile phones: Official

MOBILE phones DO increase the risk of brain cancer, scientists claimed yesterday.

The chances of developing a malignant tumour are significantly increased for people who use a mobile for ten years.

The shock finding is the result of the biggest ever study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organisation.

Scientists found a type of brain tumour called glioma is more likely in long-term mobile users.

French experts analysed data from 13 countries, including Britain.

They cross-referenced various types of tumours with mobile use.

Researchers admit the cause is unknown, but it is thought radiation from handsets could be the trigger.

Study chief Professor Elisabeth Cardis said: To underestimate the risk would be a complete disaster.

Last night a British expert insisted mobiles are not dangerous.

Professor Patricia McKinney of the University of Leeds said: Reasonable use is unlikely to increase the risk of tumours.
