Close encounters of the fun kind By Maggie Downs

The expansive desert of Landers is where stories bloom.

It is here where aerospace engineer George Van Tassel moved his family under Giant Rock, a sacred place for Native Americans and once the largest free-standing boulder in the world.

It is here where Van Tassel said he was visited by aliens, boarded their spacecraft and was given the plans for the construction of a machine that would make people young again.

It is here where Van Tassel built that machine, a giant dome called the Integratron, and held a series of conventions to help pay for its completion.

It is here where people still gather to pay homage to the paranormal phenomena of the 1950s, '60s and '70s -- and share their stories of otherworldly contact, too.

“As far as alien contact goes, Landers is every bit as important as Roswell (N.M.),” said Barbara Harris of Yucca Valley. “They just got all the attention.”

Harris wants to change that. Three years ago she organized the first Retro UFO Spacecraft Convention as a way to draw attention to Landers' history.

The quirky two-day event in cludes historical re-enactments, laser light shows, campy movies, even a foil hat competition, possibly to inspire another visit from outer space.

Visitors can enjoy relaxing sound baths inside the dome, tour the Giant Rock area and take part in question-and-answer sessions.

The more science-oriented can at tend lectures from astronomers and hear from speakers who worked with and knew Van Tassel.

"There’s so much to learn and so many people to learn from," Harris said. "This is a lighthearted event, but there are also people with im portant things to share."

The festival is also a throwback to the days when Van Tassel would draw more than 10,000 people to the high desert for meditation, speakers and an opportunity to talk about their experiences.

"This is a big part of our history, and we don’t want to lose it," she said.

George Van Tassel's first book 'I Rode A Flying Saucer' was published in 1952 - only a few books about flying saucers had already come out then, and this was also possibly the first book categorisable as "contactee literature."

Fifty-six years later, a very good condition copy has just been listed on ebay as 'Buy It Now' for $199.99 - lower offers can be made to the seller, as well.

Mass media professor makes it personal
One-on-one interaction with students gives them the confidence to 'go out and do it'

....(Jonathan) Berman, who did his undergraduate studies at McGill University in Montreal and has an MFA from New York's Bard College, said students who pick CSUSM get "close contact with teachers. I try to be there fully. The students here are respectful, appreciative; it's a one-on-one education."

And they know the faculty members are working professionals with ongoing projects. Berman has a documentary in mid-production on the Mojave Desert's Integratron, the unusual dome that has been a magnet for UFO enthusiasts.............

Star Party at the Integratron

August 9, 11:19 AM
San Diego Spirituality Examiner
Robert Reese

Landers, California's famous Integratron Dome is hosting a benefit party to support the Mojave Land Trust on Saturday, August 15th, from 8:00 - 12:00 p.m. The "star" of the night will be the glittering Perseid Meteor Showers, and will be held at the ever-fascinating and mysterious Integratron Dome property.

The Mojave Land Trust is leading the purchase of an environmentally sensitive chunk of 955 acres located near Joshua Tree National Park, which is located 2 hours North-East of San Diego. The celestial celebration offers visitors the rare opportunity of spending an evening relaxing inside the actual Integratron structure or strolling outdoors on their expansive acreage under a night sky animated by meteor showers. Proceeds from the event will directly support the Mojave Land Trust's efforts to purchase and save this land for future generations.

The ticket price of $35.00 a person includes a "Dark Skies" presentation by an actual National Service Ranger, a Desert Video Astronomer's live projections from deep-space telescopes displayed onto the outer dome, and a chakra-stimulating "Sound Bath" concert inside the dome featuring seven "singing" 99% pure quartz bowls played to previously unheard of harmonic frequencies.

The dome is 50 feet in diameter and the interior space allows--or creates--many unusual sound effects. The Integratron stands several stories high and closely resembles traditional star-viewing buildings such as the Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles. George Van Tassel, an aeronautical engineer working for Howard Hughes, designed the Integratron to enhance and manipulate the acoustics for healing and rejuvenation purposes--a sort of Sci-Fi version of the Fountain of Youth..............
