Police pelted with bricks after schoolgirl, 16, is killed by patrol car 'without lights or siren'

A schoolgirl died when she was catapulted 50ft into the air as she was hit by a police car following a suspect vehicle.

Hayley Adamson, 16, was with a group of friends when she was struck by the marked patrol vehicle, which witnesses claim didn't have its lights on, at 11.20pm on Monday evening - the day before she was due to take her GCSE English exam.

Witnesses also said the scene developed into hysteria after bricks were thrown at officers' cars in retaliation.

Miss Adamson, who was on study leave for her GCSE exams, was returning to her sister's home in Newcastle after spending the evening with friends.

Eyewitness David Forrest, 20, was among the group walking with the popular youngster when the crash occurred, while a second witness said the police car was "definitely driving without its lights on".

The schoolgirl witness said she saw the police car driving down the road without its lights on before it hit Hayley Adamson.

Shannon Thorpe, 13, who spoke with the permission of her mother, said: "I was standing on the pavement facing the road.

"Hayley was in front of me crossing the road I could see a police car approaching fast from the left and it definitely did not have its headlights on.

"I didn't have time to shout for Hayley to get out of the way before the police car ploughed into her sending her flying into the air. She let out a terrible scream.

"I'd say she flew 30ft into the air before she landed on the road. The police car skidded and came to a stop and then turned on its headlights and blue flashing lights.

"Everyone was hysterical and screaming at the police. We all knew she was dead and were angry it was a police car that had hit her.

"Some trouble started and a few car windows were smashed but there was no violence against any police officers.

"Hayley's friend George was shouting at the police and saying "you should have seen her."

"The police then tasered him and took him away......

...Chris Broatch, 23, said the patrol car that ploughed into the schoolgirl was one of two that sped along a 30mph street with no sirens sounding or blue lights flashing. He added: "I estimate they were both doing 100mph. I don't know why they were going so fast. They were going too fast to see her."

An angry crowd gathered at the crash scene in Newcastle. As police were pelted with stones, officers subdued Hayley's boyfriend with a Taser stun gun and arrested him. An official inquiry is taking place......

TRIBUTES IN PINK TO HAYLEY

A PINK coffin is carried through a sea of sadness.

That was the scene yesterday at the funeral of 16-year-old Hayley Adamson, who was hit and killed by a police car which was in a chase but allegedly not sounding its siren or flashing blue lights.

Hundreds of mourners attended the emotional ceremony, many in her favourite colour, pink.

There were so many floral tributes, two flatbed lorries were needed to take them to the chapel in Newcastle upon Tyne.............

The moment speeding policeman struck and killed girl, 16, as he drove at 94mph without siren or lights

A police officer who knocked down and killed a schoolgirl while driving more than 60mph over the speed limit was today convicted of causing death by dangerous driving.

Pc John Dougal had reached speeds of 94mph on a 30mph road with no lights or siren just moments before he ploughed into Hayley Adamson, killing her instantly.

The 41-year-old officer was travelling so fast he had effectively become a passenger in his own car, and had surrendered 'to physics', an expert witness told the jury.

Today the qualified advanced driver was convicted of causing Hayley's death following a five-day trial at Newcastle Crown Court.

Hayley, 16, was walking with a group of friends at around 11.20pm when she stepped out into Denton Road, in Newcastle's West End last May.

Dougal, who was pursuing a suspect car, said he saw the girl and tried to brake and steer away from her, but could not stop in time.

The court was shown footage from Dougal's in-car video camera, including the moment the teenager was hit............
