'Rubbing it better' does reduce pain

THE motherly mantra of 'rubbing it better' does help reduce pain, new research suggests. A type of nerve in skin - so-called C-tactile fibre - responds to gentle stroking. The motion produces a sensation of pleasure in the brain which suppresses pain, neuroscientist Francis McGlone at Unilever found.
