Erica Goldson does not believe in limitations and sees schools as the institutions where limitations are primarily instilled into young minds. Instead of subscribing to rigid modes of learning, she calls on us to be as malleable and dynamic as the world itself. Erica Goldson has been speaking, writing, and exploring alternative education since her controversial high school graduation speech two years ago. Her speech is not only on YouTube and various sites throughout the web, but it's also published in Pearson's Writing Arguments: 9th Edition textbook. As of now, she is living in Guatemala, working as a volunteer English teacher at an all-girls secretarial skills school. After learning about the need of the people of Lake Atitlan to converse with tourists with limited Spanish, she is also establishing her own English school in hopes to build a better economy.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The stay-at-home children who are being 'unschooled': Mother lets kids 'teach' themselves...

by Harriet Arkell

Published 9 December 2013

A mother of two who lets her children stay at home says they don't need to go to school because they learn enough 'naturally' by playing computer games and going for walks outside.

Maryanna Jacobs, 32, from Gorebridge, Scotland, is one of a new wave of parents embracing 'unschooling', a new philosophy that rejects traditional, curriculum-based education in favour of letting children choose what they want to do..........

The deliberate dumbing down of america

Charlotte Iserbyt is to be greatly commended for having put together the most formidable and practical compilation of documentation describing the "deliberate dumbing down" of American children by their education system. Anyone interested in the truth will be shocked by the way American social engineers have systematically gone about destroying the intellect of millions of American children for the purpose of leading the American people into a socialist world government controlled by behavioral and social scientists.

What is so mind boggling is that all of this is being financed by the American people themselves through their own taxes....

EDIT: Video is gone.

The school that says there's no such thing as a naughty child: Primary bans teachers from raising their voices and refuses to judge its pupils

By Martin Beckford, Home Affairs Editor For The Mail On Sunday

Published: 22:01, 27 June 2015 | Updated: 14:02, 28 June 2015

It sounds like a dream for a wayward child: a school with no punishments or rules, and where no pupil is considered naughty, whatever they do.

But this is the reality of Barrowford primary school in Lancashire, which refuses to 'judge' pupils and bans teaches from raising their voices.

And the children, aged between four and 11, are urged to sort out any disputes between themselves by talking through their feelings using New-Age-style phrases such as 'you have emptied my resilience bucket' instead of getting angry.

Headteacher Rachel Tomlinson admitted her 'sanction-free' approach was ‘extreme’ but insisted it was good for the children.

She told The Mail on Sunday: 'We don't label children naughty at all. It's important that they seem themselves as intrinsically good and build up a positive sense of self.'......

Teacher quits with epic rant...................

"The Disorder Is In The System, Not The Children" Teacher Quits With Epic Rant

November 1, 2015 by John Vibes

Teacher Wendy Bradshaw pointed out that how the structure of modern schooling is abusive to children, and that children who are labeled as "bad" are many times just having trouble fitting into the rigid structure that is being forced on them.

Her resignation letter can be read below:

"To: The School Board of Polk County, Florida

'I love teaching. I love seeing my students' eyes light up when they grasp a new concept and their bodies straighten with pride and satisfaction when they persevere and accomplish a personal goal. I love watching them practice being good citizens by working with their peers to puzzle out problems, negotiate roles, and share their experiences and understandings of the world. I wanted nothing more than to serve the students of this county, my home, by teaching students and preparing new teachers to teach students well… I not only love teaching, I am excellent at it, even by the flawed metrics used up until this point. Every evaluation I received rated me as highly effective.

Like many other teachers across the nation, I have become more and more disturbed by the misguided reforms taking place which are robbing my students of a developmentally appropriate education. Developmentally appropriate practice is the bedrock upon which early childhood education best practices are based, and has decades of empirical support behind it......

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.

Eddy Zhong, successful technology entrepreneur, dives into the truth behind our K-12 education system. Eddy strongly believes that the education system diminishes creativity and confines children to a certain path towards success. He contends that kids are taught to believe college is a necessary step in life and that it is mandatory to achieve one's goals. His talk challenges the commonly held beliefs of our entire education structure.

Homework in Elementary School Is Wrecking Our Kids: Let's Ban It

There are simply better uses for after-school hours

By Heather Shumaker / Salon

March 7, 2016

"There is no evidence that any amount of homework improves the academic performance of elementary students."

This statement, by homework research guru Harris Cooper, of Duke University, is startling to hear, no matter which side of the homework debate you’re on. Can it be true that the hours of lost playtime, power struggles and tears are all for naught? That millions of families go through a nightly ritual that doesn’t help? Homework is such an accepted practice, it's hard for most adults to even question its value.

When you look at the facts, however, here's what you find: Homework has benefits, but its benefits are age dependent......

Get rid of homework: Why adult expectations stress children and affect their development

Scott Timberg

Salon

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 16:19 UTC

If you are hoping to raise a child who always shares, who follows all the rules, and doesn't act angry once in a while, you will want to skip the books by Heather Shumaker. A speaker and authority on early childhood and parenting, Shumaker has attracted attention for her argument that we should "ban homework in elementary school." That's just one part of her new book, "It's OK to Go Up The Slide: Renegade Rules For Raising Confident and Creative Kids." It's a sequel of sorts to her first book, "It's OK Not To Share and Other Renegade Rules For Raising Competent and Compassionate Kids."

Shumaker generally argues that parents should rarely force and pressure children, and we should respect each kid's individual speed and style instead of imposing the same set of expectations on all of them. This doesn't come simply from a free-to-be-you-and-me worldview: She draws on solid research to make many of her points.

Salon spoke to the Michigan-based Shumaker from Ohio, where she was visiting a pre-school......

Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall

Lifted from "Pink Floyd The Wall" film, this video is actually comprised of two songs: "The Happiest Days Of Our Lives" and "Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2" This video became the official video of "Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2" after the release of the film in 1982.

This single is by far Pink Floyd's greatest ever mainstream success, instantly attaining classic status, and is perhaps their most famous piece of work.

ABINTW Pt. 2 even became the protest song of a group of South African students during the apartheid regime, the song was subsequently banned in South Africa.

The song itself is a protest against the rigidity of British schools, and in particular, the boarding school system Waters would have been part of as a young boy.

The poem read out by the schoolteacher is a direct reference to "Money"

The schoolteacher in this video was portrayed by the late, great, Scottish actor Alex McAvoy who passed away in June 2005.

If you haven't seen "The Wall" I would Highly recommend you to do so.
