HW97K accessory rail .......

I wanted to add an accessory rail to my HW97K, but inspection of the stock routing for the action revealed that inletting a standard rail into the stock would not be a good idea - just not enough supporting wood would remain. This was my solution. After mounting it and handling the rifle, I will be doing some further refinements - like rounding or chamfering the vertical corners, and bevelling the horizontal corners a bit. Works perfectly with my bipod, and should work equally well with a knee rest, "D" handle, or any other rail mounted accessories.

Much better now ......

A few chamfered edges and slightly more rounded corners make for a much nicer feel when used as a hand rest.

I know you mentioned it before, but I can't remember, did you use a camera tripod?

Yes, an old camera tripod donated two of it's legs.....

For the cause. The remaining leg is being considered for use as a mono-pod - just working out some details for the mounting.

Shooting the HW97 from the bipod .....

September 30 2007, 5:21 PM

I have often heard it said, "recoiling spring piston airguns simply can not be shot (accurately) from a bipod or a solid rest". I disagree.
Granted, it is generally much easier to get good groups from a recoiling springer when a soft pillow, or similar rest is used, but a solid rest can also be used with good results. It is primarily a matter of the shooter adapting to the firing cycle of the gun. Obviously, the harsher the firing characteristics of the gun, the more difficult the shooter's job becomes.

I finally had a chance today, to do some proper testing with my HW97K and my home-made bipod, detailed above in this thread. The HW97K is shooting right on at 12 FPE, and has a very smooth firing cycle. The first few shots indicated that the POI from the bipod, as opposed to the POI when shot with elbows rested on knees while seated, was about 2" high, but dead center. Once the scope elevation was adjusted for around a 20 yard zero, I did some testing for grouping while shooting from the bipod, and the attached pic shows groups shot at 10, 15, 20, and 25 yards. I'll be doing further testing, out to 55 yards when time permits. The 15 yd group was shaping up to be the best of the bunch, with the first four shots in about a 1/4" dia ragged hole, and then I pulled the last shot, labelled "me" - LOL! Not too shabby, considering lightly gusting wind thrown into the mix. When shooting offhand now, an estimated 2" of "hold-under" must be used.
