Angel & Richard in "The Promise'

THE most redundant phrase we heard Angel Locsin and Richard Gutierrez said about their Valentine movie “The Promise” is, “maganda po ang pelikula at sobrang pinaghirapan namin ito,” or something to that effect.

We discovered the truth and the fruits of their labor during the elaborate press preview of the nth retelling of an adaptation of the romantic classic “Wuthering Heights” held at the Podium last Friday night.

And our verdict? Well, never mind the French line briefly uttered by the lead characters on the seashore, “The Promise” will captivate and enthrall you just as “The Notebook” did. For one, the cinematography is simply breathtaking and the music is absorbing and powerful. It is like a magnificent painting coming to life before your very eyes.

The youthful and wonderful cast did their homework well from Rhian Ramos (her first movie appearance in a major role) who is more than just a ravishing beauty to TJ Trinidad who absorbed his character well. Angel Locsin was so right when she said that she would not be able to enact those passionate scenes if Richard Gutierrez was not her leading man. They are a sight to behold and so comfortable with one another. Even the love-team of Mark Herras and Jennylyn Mercado would pale in comparison with what Angel and Richard showed in “The Promise.” Their chemistry smoulders and it is hard to duplicate.

The biggest revelation, of course, is the transformation of Richard Gutierrez from a teen heartthrob into an actor. He came out with an intense portrayal of Gabriel from whose point of view “The Promise” revolves. He is definitely on his way to tackling a new phase in his movie career which will bring him favorable results.

What better gift to treat your love one than to bring her to the nearest theater this Valentine to watch The Promise. It won’t even hurt your pocket.

Kudos to Mike Tuviera for a splendid job like “The Promise” and promise us you will give us more in the near future, Valentine or not.

First day gross of "The Promise" reaches more than P10 million--GMA Films
Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin personally thanked the moviegoers during their theater tour.

Congratulations kina Richard Gutierrez, Angel Locsin, Rhian Ramos, TJ Trinidad, Ryan Eigenmann, Direk Mike Tuviera at ang kanyang production staff, sa Regal Entertainment, at sa GMA Films dahil big success ang first day showing ng pelikula nilang The Promise.

As early as 3:00 p.m. kahapon, February 14, sa opening day ng The Promise, nakatanggap na kami ng unconfirmed report na na-surpass na nito ang first hour showing ng Till l Met You (last movie ng GMA Films) nina Regine Velasquez at Robin Padilla. Sigurado na rin daw na malalampasan nito ang kinita ng Valentine movie nina Richard at Angel last year na I Will Always Love You, na produced din ng GMA Films at Regal Entertainment.

Base sa first day ng The Promise, tinanggap ng mga tao ang unang mature roles na ginampanan nina Richard at Angel dahil sa dami ng taong pumila sa mga sinehan. Dahil dito, nag-time out muna sa taping ng Lupin sina Richard at Rhian at ng Asian Treasures si Angel upang mag-theater tour sila at personal na magpasalamat sa lahat ng mga taong nanood ng The Promise.

Nagpunta sila ng SM City North Edsa, SM Megamall, at Glorietta Activity Center. Nag-show sila sa mga naturang lugar kasama sina Brenan Espartinez at Aryana na may version ng theme song ng The Promise, at si Marc Tupaz kasama ang banda niyang Shamrock.

Ipinahayag din nina Roselle Monteverde ng Regal Entertainment at Anette Gozon-Abrogar na malamang umabot sa more than P10 million ang kikitain ng The Promise during its opening day.

Higher than Let the Love Begin or I Will Always Love You." Ang Let the Love Begin (2005) at I Will Always Love You (2006) ang first two Valentine movies nina Richard at Angel.

RICHARD Gutierrez easily got out of his Captain Barbell image via the romantic movie The Promise.

Super Noypi could have been Rhian’s introductory film if not for her hectic taping schedule for Captain Barbell, kaya pinalitan siya ni Sandara Park.

Very competent din sina TJ Trinidad at Ryan Eigenmann. Mahusay at very convincing sina Angel at Richard sa kanilang repective roles.

Sabi ng marami, mas realistic daw ang love scenes kung lovers in real life ang gumagawa.

Happy and contented boyfriend si Richard ni Georgina Wilson habang si Angel just broke up with Oyo Sotto.

Aakalain mo ngang there’s something beautiful going on between them off-camera.

Buzz Station

The Promise fails to live up

Mike Tuviera is no Mac Alejandre! Produced by Regal Entertainment and GMA Films, The Promise failed to deliver the feel-good romance loaded with kilig moments expected from a season of hearts movie. It did not have the power to heat up feelings or even to make hearts throb. Stars Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin were in a fiery liplock but there was no shrieking in the house. Mac could have pulled this off with no sweat.

Acting was two-dimensional. Only Eugene Domingo was effective, but she was better when directed by Wenn Deramas. Rhian Ramos stayed TVC cute. Direction was mannered. Cinematography seemed to be making up for the stale story. Overhead shots were used without purpose. Production design was eye-candy, but inappropriate and incoherent. The fair-skinned Ryan Eigenmann must have skin peeling from Belo as he was a dark teenager in the backstory. One scene showed Richard with two back wounds, but in the next, voila, one had magically disappeared! Music was very good, but wrongly used. I got the feeling Angel was ready to break into “The hills are alive with the sound of music” any moment. And I’ve cited only some. There’s a full list.

After Gigil and The Promise, Mike must give up the Golden Boy from Hollywood idea and learn Third World moviemaking. Then he’ll probably have decent outputs.

Here are unsolicited opinions about The Promise: “Tried to watch it last Saturday. Hindi ko tinapos. Ayaw ko masira memory ko ng Hihintayin Kita sa Langit.” “It’s actually a very bad film. First candidate ko siya for worst local film of the year! Di ko na lang sinulat.” “Hindi talaga bagay si Richard and Angel. Masyadong pilit!” “Ang pangit-pangit talaga ng The Promise!” No hands!
