At a time when people thought that ABS-CBN has totally conceded to its rival network in the fight for dominance in the weekday afternoon block, news broke out that the Kapamilya network has put together two of its drama stars, Kristine Hermosa and Angelika dela Cruz, to headline Prinsesa ng Banyera signaling ABS-CBN’s much-awaited comeback into producing daytime serials.
“Prinsesa ng Banyera will complete the Noontime Bida experience,” says business unit head Enrico Santos. “The ABS-CBN noontime block already has top-caliber talk, game and variety shows with Boy & Kris, Pilipinas, Game K N B? and Wowowee. Now, it’s time to offer our kapamilya worldwide a quality drama series that will change the way Filipinos know afternoon dramas.”
Prinsesa ng Banyera tells the story of two sisters who led different lives, but found themselves sharing life in a fish port searching for love and acceptance.
Enrico adds that Prinsesa ng Banyera is ABS-CBN’s way of responding to a barrage of requests to pair Kristine with her Gulong ng Palad leading man TJ Trinidad. It also stars Rafael Rosell with Jaclyn Jose, Allan Paule, Shamaine Buencamino, Chokoleit, Denise Laurel, Joem Bascon, Kathryn Bernardo, among others.
“The rapport of Kristine and TJ is undeniable,” admits Enrico. “But in Prinsesa ng Banyera, fans will see how good friends Kristine and Angelika are better enemies onscreen.”
Kristine Hermosa, one of prettiest faces in the local entertainment industry, has starred on teleseryes Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako, Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas, Gulong Ng Palad, Palimos ng Pag-ibig and Pangako Sa ‘Yo.
She admits, however, that her role as the optimistic Maningning in Prinsesa ng Banyera thrills her no end.
“Taking on the role of Maningning does not only challenge me in my craft,” says Kristine. “It also serves as a fervent reminder that maintaining a positive outlook in life is important. Nakakabilib ’yon dahil sa kabutihan niya, pati mga lalake sa pier, nirerespeto siya. Hindi ako mahinhin dito kaya exciting.”
When asked what the audience can expect from Prinsesa ng Banyera, she says, “it is exciting to explore the lives of people living in a provincial pier.”
She also adds that Prinsesa ng Banyera highlights many facets of love — romantic, sibling and community.
Angelika, meanwhile, plays the role of Mayumi, whose immensely strong desire to live a comfortable life threatens to destroy her life’s relationships.
“My role may have flaws, but the public will know why Mayumi did those things,” says Angelika. “Sino ba naman kasi ang ayaw magkaroon ng magandang buhay? People can relate to Mayumi because we all want to lead better lives.”
She adds that her character in the series is reminiscent of Dina Bonnevie’s memorable role in Magdusa Ka and Maricel Soriano’s landmark performance in Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit.
Angelika was part of Esperanza, Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas, Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkantao and Bituing Walang Ningning, where she essayed the role of Lavinia Arguelles to Sarah Geronimo’s Dorina Pineda.
“With headwriter Keiko Aquino, the show offers interesting twists in the story,” adds Angelika. “Pero kailangan abangan kung sino ba talaga sa amin ni Kristine ang totoong Prinsesa ng Banyera.”
Prinsesa ng Banyera also marks the first solo directorial assignment of stage actor Andoy Ranay, who helped Wenn Deramas meg TV hits like Kokey, Kampanerang Kuba and Marina.
Prinsesa ng Banyera will premiere in October on ABS-CBN.
