Back on October 1, 1991, I won Bracket II at Capitol Raceway. At that time, first place paid $500. I didn't write down what the entry fee was though. :-( Back then, there were only two choices to run in, Bracket I or Bracket II. In the years prior to that, there were four choices, Street, Heavy, Pro, and Super Pro. What's it like now? Two classes still? I haven't been to Capitol since November 16th of 1991. I was also a regular at 75-80 Dragway, but I ran there mostly in the late 70's and early 80's. The last pass I have logged in my records at 75-80 was on July 21, 1984. There were four bracket classes at that time. One of the pictures on my website has the Capitol Raceway tower in the background.
Somehow, I've never felt "shafted" by any payout. As I've said, if Cunningham at Capitol Raceway had wanted to shift the purse to strictly trophies and free entries (in order to avoid going strictly test and tune), I'd have been just as happy. Maybe more happy, cause then the track would be making more profit (if those that say they are coming just for the fun of it continued to come) and I'd be able to compete without spending a wad of money on entry fees. I'm very afraid that we are pricing ourselves right out of the hobby business and into the professional business. To me, brackets don't make a great deal of sense, once they reach the definition of professional. Ah well. Just wish we all did it for fun, like so many SAY they do. Take care. Tom Worthington.
