Ouch. My heart goes out to ya. Been there done that. This is the main reason why I rarely play solo and if I do I make sure I have friends online for extraction. When I DO solo, I'm taking one step at a time (step, wait, step, wait) along the walls (less sides to be attacked from and if theres a horde comin at me I try to get into a corner as fast as I can ( only three at a time can hit me with non-ranged attacks).
Also I make sure I carry a scroll of TP (for when I fry all my mana) and I try to remember to make a tp on the other side of the wall from where I think I may be fighting, in case I die(get down, telekin/with inv screen open, get away fast!). If enter a lvl where theres only ranged attack monsters I usually skip the lvl and make a new game. Never too much caution in Abys. Those that fight and run away get to keep thier stuff!

Best backup is a friend in the wings (with HIS friend In the OTHER wings, hehheh) =)
