Mage Co-Op

How do you Coop with a mage?
I swear it doesnt work all my spells are currently on level 23 with 311 ac...if i shoot(fireball) close to anyone, they die 1000 to 2000 damage kills everything so how do i solve this?
Its even worse with a nova doing 2000 to 3000

HELP!
