Sam, not just another pretty boy

By WALDEN SADIRI

By now, those who have said that Sam Milby’s just another "pretty-Amboy" in showbiz may have already eaten their own words. Because Sam has proven in the almost two years he has stayed in the business that he’s more than just a handsome face and actually more of a multi–faceted artist: Actor, TV host, singer, guitar player and even a drummer. Such diversified talents have been helping him be complete as an artist. A fast career rise in a short time, Sam Milby is indeed showbiz-dom’s latest phenomenon!

So how does it feel to be a phenomenon?

"Honestly, I don’t feel like that. I’m very blessed with all the work I’m doing right now. I love what I’m doing and I’m glad that I’m still here because I know that especially nowadays not a lot of people stay around that long… everything that happened to me the last year it’s amazing. I mean, even if I’m not in showbiz now, I’d be very happy with everything that has already happened," he proudly exclaimed.

Reminding himself that there would always be someone who’d come to be the "next big thing" is what keeps him level–headed. Such belief prevents him from letting his popularity gets to his head.

"I know that everything that I have right now is temporary no matter who you are and how you look at it… I just have to keep that in mind. And second, honestly I’m happy I have work," he said.

As an actor, Sam Milby’s one of the few blessed with consecutive movie projects. He first debuted in the box-office hit Star Cinema movie "Close to You" and then followed it up with another box–office success with Toni Gonzaga in "You Are The One." His third film, which is still showing, with Toni Gonzaga and Zanjoe Marudo enitled "You Got Me," is also raking in good box-office receipts.

Having three more films with Star Cinema, he is slated to shoot his fourth movie from the last week of April till the whole month of June.

He stressed, "I’m just happy that I’m working and that is what I love doing. As an actor I just want to improve myself more… It’s just now that I’m really fully launched as an actor I think because I’ve been doing much acting lately... I’m getting more comfortable with acting right now but my first love will always be singing and music."

If he wants proof that he is improving, critics have noticed that Sam, particularly in his latest film "You Got Me" and his soap opera "Maging Sino Ka Man" is doing pretty well in dramatic scenes especially in his crying scenes. He’s one of the few actors who could time his tears to come off easily and perfectly in the scenes he is in.

Having a happy childhood, Sam couldn’t explain why he can cry easily on cue. He pointed to the likes of Piolo Pascual and John Lloyd Cruz to be actors who are very good in crying scenes.

"In ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’ parang you feel the character because it’s been going on for so long. So sometimes you get used to the character. You know and feel what he feels. Sometimes I’ll be so tired I want to cry. No, joke lang," laughed Sam.

He admits that he knows deep inside him that he still has a lot of improvements to make. And with his "crying scenes" he opined that he could think of something bad that happened in his life before showbiz and draw emotions from there.

"For me there’s a lot of things that happened in the past but I’ve moved on...I’ve been hurt pretty bad by one of my ex-girlfriends. So when I think about that I get it from that. But I’ve moved on and it’s something that doesn’t also affect me anymore," he intimated.

With regards to his first love – music, with the successes of all his shows, especially "The Hearthrobs" which is having its repeat on Macrh 17 at the Aliw Theater, does he feel like he will be the country’s next Concert King?

"I don’t know if I ever got really good at doing concerts. I think I still have a lot of improvements pa...I still have stage fright and I’m sharing the stage with Piolo and Piolo’s been doing this for how many years na. I don’t feel that I can level-up to him...I’d give him the title, he’s very good," smiled Sam who revealed that there are plans for his major solo concert this year.

So what’s to expect from "The Hearthrobs – The Repeat?"

As of press time, Star Records and ASAP Live Entertainment are working on Sharon Cuneta and Ai Ai delas Alas to be their special guests. Other than that, there would just be some changes in the lineup but it would still be the same "The Hearthrobs" show staged at the Music Museum last Feb. 2 and 3, 2007.

Aside from "The Hearthrobs," Sam Milby and Piolo Pascual (another phenomenal artist in showbizdom today) with Rica Peralejo and Pokwang will have shows sarting April 8 in some key cities in the US like in Chicago, New York, Las Vegas and Toronto, Canada.

If he’s deemed a "phenomenon," he also attributed it to "Pinoy Big Brother" as an integral part of his success because for him all the housemates unexpectedly became instant celebrities. And with the start of the second season of "Pinoy Big Brother" he doesn’t see any of the new housemates as his future rivals.

"I don’t look at them that way. I know this is a competitive business, that is true, but at the same time I don’t look at anybody as being rivals…PBB definitely broadened their horizons by going global, they searched globally di ba? And I think they can find good people through that," opined the actor.

At the moment, his goal is to become a very good actor. He wouldn’t even mind if he gets meatier leading man roles in his next movie projects.

"I would love that because acting has been my dream job. It’s also a craft. You have stars who could be actors. And actors who would really want to perfect the craft. I really want to be someone that can do that. Just to improve. I just want to be known as a good actor someday!"

For his female fans, Sam Milby will only contemplate on having a girlfriend when he has time to spend with a girlfriend. Given his hectic schedule – enagements, shootings, shows, pictorials, etcetera, he’d be an eligible bachelor for years to come?

"It’s not that I don’t want a girlfriend, it’s just that if I’m going to have a girlfriend, I want to have time. Because it will be unfair. If I have a girlfriend and I never see her parang I will probabaly start some fights di ba? You never see each other and it would probably affect your work too. So I want to have more time for myself and my career."

And his comment to Anne Curtis’ cover and photo spread in Uno Magazine is "She’s hot not only in the pictures but as a person…I like her lips. She has full and nice lips!" Now if only he has time…

* to the kismets and fanneatics, i hope the last paragraph will make you all smile from ear to ear *
