It is hard to give specifics without observing what you are doing now, but I can give you some general things.
1. Keep it simple. Don't get fancy your bread and butter in tournament fighting is your back fist, reverse punch, and side/hook/round kick. Focus on these tools both offensively and defensively.
2. Look for targets not zones. People have a tendency to just throw a technique at the body and not a specific target. If you go for a target and it is blocked, it is easy to change up and find a new target while your weapon is in motion.
3. If you cannot find openings, make them. Set your opponent up, change up your tools and use feints.
