In general, I have had good luck with this. One thing to be sure of is the firing aircraft must either NOT have a FLIR loaded, or put the laser in MLAS mode and not turn it on, otherwise the missile will preferably follow the firing aircraft's laser spot (which may be pointing at borresight if no target is designated).
With MAVE it is also helpful to UNCAGE the seeker to spot the laser spot (though if you have an IN RAGE indicator, you are probably already doing that).
