I tried to do this too. The closest thing you can do is use the 'click through the HUD' (HUD TDC) method to target the unit. You can then use the Target Steering to find it. Unfortunately, you would have to lose whatever target you had already marked, and if you went to mark another target, you would lose the Target of Opportunity Mark.
One thing you could do, if there is a BULLSEYE in the mission is note the coordinates relative to BULLSEYE in the RADAR MFD (with the RADAR cursors at the very bottom signifiying your location). You can then, at least, return to that spot by watching the BULLSEYE coordinates as you fly back.
