She And I
© Graham Henderson 2000
She was standing in the shadows. When I opened up the door.
She asked if I’d been sleeping. Well it was a quart’ to four.
I heard her voice was trembling. Asked if she was all right.
I got the answer to my question. When I turned on the light.

Tears rolled from her blackened eyes. Hes lips were swelled and split.
She said her man had done it. In a wild and drunkard fit.
She asked if she could stay the night. She had no place else to go.
Said she couldn’t face her folks. She would rather they don’t know.
Chorus
She and I had been lovers. She and I had been wed.
But that had ended years ago. When she chose another bed.
It still clutched at my heart though. To see her used so bad.
By the man who had took the heart of the only love I’ve had.
Instrumental
I made up a pot of coffee. And we talked through break of day
I dug out some of her clothes. I could never thrown away.
Then before I went to work. I gave her back her key.
Told her to keep it close. In case she needed me.
Chorus
She and I had been lovers. She and I had been wed.
But that had ended years ago. When she chose another bed.
It still clutched at my heart though. To see her used so bad.
By the man who had took the heart of the only love I’ve had.

She was gone when I got home. She’d left the key in the door.
I knew she would. ‘Cos she and I. Had been this road before
