Guess who else shares your concerns for our use of this planet?

God. (Shhh!)

Here's a quick clip from the last book of the Bible that speaks of the coming end of our world, and the reckoning we must each make for our use of the good earth given us.

Revelation 11:18--

"The nations were angry;
and God's wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,
and for rewarding your servants the prophets
and your saints and those who reverence your name,
both small and great--
and for destroying those who destroy the earth."

Sounds divinely fierce, but it threatens no worse than what we've done to each other and are doing to our world already. It simply brings the planet Maker back into the final scene to do the toxic waste clean up properly--which includes removal of the polluters. (Maybe if we clean things up, He won't have to.)

Hit my preacher's bone with that one, Graham. I may have a thing for my wife in her shoes, but down deep in my bones I'm one of those Bible guys.

Want to do our planet a favor? Become a vegetarian.

One meat eater consumes four times the water resources and impacts the planet to a greater extent than do seven vegetarians. It also takes many times the ammount of land to grow the grain to feed the animal before it is butchered and eaten, than if the meat eater ate the grain himself. It takes about 16 pounds of grain to produce a single pound of hamburger.(Think smouldering rain forests being cleared for a few seasons' beef grazing before the soil becomes too sterile to support even grasslands...)

It is not an offense against the Owner of this good green orb to eat meats He has allowed us, of course. (See Deuteronomy 14 and Leviticus 11 for the prescribed menu.) But a plant food diet is what we were originally designed to consume (Genesis 1:29). That's the best fuel for the human machine's effective functioning, both physically and mentally (Daniel 3).

This is, perhaps, one of the reasons that men who belong to the Seventh-day Adventist Church live an average of 7-14 years longer than their fellow Americans. (Their women also benifit as well.) Half of this rapidly growing 10 million member group choose a vegetarian lifestyle--and they avoid smoking, drinking, and recreational drug use as well. They believe they owe these things to the earth, to themselves, and to God.

There's good scientific evidence that being a vegetarian is a healthy choice for anyone. In fact, eating "bread instead of beef" is probably the single greatest lifetime contribution an ordinary person can make in caring for their environment. It is a simple and effective way to tread longer, and more lightly on the earth.

Every small choice in this direction helps.

(This public service announcement was provided for you by a fourth generation vegetarian. Ride your hobby horse, don't eat it!)
