I'm watching the zMAX infomercial right now, 6 months to the day after the FTC filed
Civil Action No. 1:01CV00126
FTC File No. 002 3256
asserting that zMAX does not perform as advertised, destroys bearings, and is in fact nothing but tinted mineral oil.
glad I did a quick websearch before I called in my credit card number.
But why is this still showing on my local WB affiliate, San Francisco's TV20?
I've searched the web and the FTC site for an hour and can find no actual new information after the original announcement on feb 10 that suit had been filed.
This is not a particularly subtle or complex claim...
The stuff either is or is not %100 mineral oil.
Has there been any finding in this matter?
My first guess is that the zMAX people are fighting procedural points in the courts, and that until there is some court finding the WB affiliate, KBWB, is still contractually obligated to broadcast the infomercial.

Why would Carrol Shelby put mineral oil in his cars? Is that guy really Carrol Shelby? Is Carrol Shelby even still alive? Maybe he's gone loopy at age 77, or went broke and really needed the endorsement money, or maybe he's always been unethical?
Maybe the FTC got paid by the auto industry to crush an inexpensive product that would make engines last too long, thus having a negative impact on yearly demand for thier products by sheeplike consumers like you and me, and thus a negative impact on the the investment demands of an enormous mass of faceless shareholders who would prefer not to think about how those demands might be met, like, er, you and me...
...nah, nothing like that could ever happen...
...and nobody could ever get away with selling mineral oil as high-tech voodoo on national tv for 6 months after the Feds busted them, right? Right?
So what gives? Anyone got any new information?

Hey dude... unfortunately I was suckered into shelling out $50 for Z-max despite a friend of mine who is a professional race car driver recommending I don't purchase it. one discrepency about your post.. even if Z-max is mineral oil you dont drain your oil out and use solely Z-max,actually you combine the two. In all honesty, Z-max has the aroma of alcohol if anything else. All three products smell exactly the same. there is no ingredients on the bottle if any of ya's are wondering. bottom line... dont buy it. it is a bunch of crap.

After all that has transpired here in this forum, I was very surprised to see the ad again too.
Like Kevin, in the above post, I'm beginning to think that there may be more to this story than simply a product that doesn't work as advertised.
I think that we're going to have to bear down on this situation and really do a full investigation, John Stossel, Mike Wallace or Stone Phillips style. In fact, I think I'll go find some links to the offices of those investigators and forward them the links to this forum.
My favorite way to explain what's going on is that the stuff DOES in fact work as advertised and that the effort to villify it by calling it simply "mineral oil" and taking Zmax to court over it is an attempt by the auto industry to shut them down.
It sort of reminds me of the old 100 mpg carburator. We've all heard stories, for years, about how this or that inventor was "bought out" or "disappeared" after coming up with a way to move cars further will much less fuel.

SLade that's right! I have NEVER heard of a REAL race car driver OR BETTER YET THE TEAM'S MECHANIC (I am my own "team" mechanic) using this stuff.
When a race team says they use a additive (most times); they only put in a drop of it into the oil, so they can say they use it, and not lie. They don't put in the whole bottle, just a drop.
I PLAN TO START USING REDLINE SYNTHETIC motor OIL and gearoil in the team's cars. This is the oil many race teams have gone to here, and many Z-cars run it now.

Remember the Voyager, Burt Rutan's airplane that flew around the world
without refueling? The Rutan team used the aviation version of Z-Max in its engine oil. Z-Max has been used in aviation oil for years, only under the name "AVBLEND(also Linkite)," and it was approved for aircraft as well by the FAA. That being so, why is it that the FTC is going after Z-Max as a fraud when it has never gone after "AVBLEND?" in an aircraft market controlled by the FAA that is much more demanding in its standards than the auto market? Read Bob Sikorsky's blurb on it at the Z-Max website, where he goes into the FAA and its decades of use in aircraft.

So great, Avablend can be used in airplanes. What in the hell does that have to do with my V-8 Chevy truck? The fact is, this stuff along with all the others are pure garbage. What in the world is a "micro lubricant", and why doesn't chemical companies market their own "micro lubricant" Reason, It is junk science. No and I mean NO oil company nor auto maker says use this stuff. Lets see Mobil 1 and Exxon are the largest company in the world, I am sure they have looked at this awesome Z-max and found out what most people know. surprise, it's still junk. The reason you see the infomercial is .99 cents worth of crap sold for 49.99 mmmm sounds like profit to me. No go out and buy all those gadgets that increase MPG, cause Popular Mechanics tested them too, guess what more junk that does not work. A fool and his money are soon parted.

CONCORD, N.C.--March 20, 2003--Oil-Chem Research Corp. (Oil-Chem) and Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (SMI) announced today a resolution to their dispute with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) concerning the advertising of zMAX Power System.
"We at Speedway Motorsports are very pleased that the staff of the Federal Trade Commission has specifically confirmed that Oil-Chem can continue to make the following claims in its advertising and promotion of zMAX," stated Marylaurel E. Wilks, vice president and general counsel of SMI.

-- zMAX increases horsepower,
-- zMAX dissipates engine heat,
-- zMAX helps to improve or restore gas mileage and reduce emissions in older cars, by virtue of reducing engine deposits,

Well great Z Max beat the FTC. I still say.. Show me in print from ANY auto manf, or ANY oil company that says add this stuff to their product. No one can, because it IS NOT proven to do anything. Its time to quit dreaming and face cold hard facts, Zmax, Dura Lube, Slick 50, are nothing but worthless money making ideas. No one OTHER than the companies that make this stuff and their paid pitch men think these products work. End of story.

The truth is, Zmax does work...somewhat. But, maybe not in all vehicles. I've tried it in 3 vehicles, including 2 Chevy trucks. Improves MPG about 5%, but, for a fairly short period of time...like 1000 miles or so (I think it volatilizes and evaporates). It is expensive stuff. And, I can't really say that it is not hard on your engine...it may be. The way it works, it reduces friction in the engine, which intuitively sounds like there is no way that this could be a bad thing...but, who knows.
Bottom line: too friggin' expensive for a small gain over a short period of time. BUT...it is the only thing that I've ever found to improve MPG at any measurable amount. And, it's better than the other crap (Duralube, et al), which I agree (I've tested most of them), are not worth the bottle they are sold in.
I wonder if anyone would want to try some in a supercharger...?
