Some one asked about Paw Paws

I'm a little slow getting to this, but I recall a reader asking about Paw paws earlier on. I know the paw paw as Carica paypaya, known in most countries as the papaya. Anyway, here are some cultural details for your information:

Paw paws (Carica papaya) need warmth and sunshine and revel in reflected heat against a wall. They also need protection from wind.

They require light, well-drained soils which should be kept damp in hot weather and dry in cold weather. Being tropical, they need a long dry season (autumn to early spring). Keep them as dry as possible in winter if you are in a cooler area. A mature plant may withstand a light frost if some overhead protection is provided, but try to keep them frost free. Ideally, if kept in a pot they can be moved to a warmer spot for the winter.

Paw paws can be fairly short lived, but can be propagated readily from seed.
