I agree, do not trim them down in any way, they bloom off the growth from the previous year, even if the stalks look dead, also be careful prunung at all, at this point. I have had good luck surounding mine with sand,and a light spray of cocoa mulch. it helps them hold the moisture that they need in the roots. make sure they are in well draining soil. I bet they will do the rest.
